Button Flower Necklaces

Materials

  • Polyform Sculpey Clay: Hot Pink, Lemon, Turquoise
  • Bright buttons, 32
  • White cord, 36” lengths, three
  • Recycled metal pop-tops, three

Tools

  • Acrylic brayer or rolling pin
  • Wooden dowel, 1/8”
  • Decorative-edge scissors
  • API Crafter’s Pick Incredibly Tacky Glue
  • Parchment-lined baking sheet, oven

Basic Supplies

white paper, clear tape, scissors, toothpick, ruler, compass (or circle template)

Directions

Note

  • 1. To condition clay, remove from package and roll in hands until soft. Flatten clay and fold in half. If clay cracks, keep conditioning.

Flower Necklace

  • 1. Cut 1-3/4” white paper circle. For flower, roll ball of clay and flatten into 1/8”-thick sheet. Position paper circle on clay and lightly trace around circle with toothpick. Cut out circle using decorative-edge scissors. Remove paper circle from clay.
  • 2. Press button on center of flower. For petals, make cuts in clay around button. Make imprints or details in petals with toothpick or dowel end. For hole, press end of dowel into flower petal.
  • 3. Position flower on parchment-lined baking sheet. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to bake flower in oven. Let cool.
  • 4. Wrap tape around cord ends and twist into points. Insert cord end through hole on flower. Knot cord at top of flower. Insert cord through button holes and knot cord ends in back. Thread cord in and out of pop-top openings. Knot cord on top of pop-top.
  • 5. Thread buttons onto each cord end. Knot cord at top of buttons. Tie cord ends together, forming necklace.

Tip

  • 1. To roll clay into sheet of uniform thickness, roll between two dowels or rulers of the same thickness.
