Friendly Bugs Mobile

Materials

  • GENERAL:
  • Wooden square dowels, 12” lengths, two
  • Small screw eyes, six
  • Wiggle eyes (two for each insect)
  • Fishing line
  • DRAGONFLY:
  • Recycled toilet paper tube
  • Dow STYROFOAM Brand Foam ball, 1-1/2” (cut in half)
  • Craft foam: white, blue
  • White chenille stem, 4” length
  • CATERPILLAR:
  • Dow STYROFOAM Brand Foam balls, 1-1/2”, three
  • Yellow craft foam
  • Yellow chenille stems, 12” lengths, three
  • BUMBLEBEE:
  • Recycled toilet paper tube
  • Dow STYROFOAM Brand Foam ball, 2” (cut in half)
  • Craft foam: yellow, black, white
  • Black chenille stem, 4” length
  • BUTTERFLY:
  • Recycled toilet paper tube
  • Dow STYROFOAM Brand Foam ball, 2” (cut in half)
  • Craft foam: yellow, blue
  • Yellow chenille stem, 4” length
  • LADYBUG:
  • Recycled toilet paper tube
  • Dow STYROFOAM Brand Foam ball, 2” (cut in half)
  • Craft foam: red, black
  • Black chenille stem, 4” length

Tools

  • Delta Ceramcoat Acrylic Paints: Navy Blue, Magnolia White, Bright Yellow, Leaf Green, Bright Red, Black
  • Glue gun and sticks
  • Small drill and bit

Basic Supplies

transfer paper, pencil, copy paper, scissors, paintbrush or sponge scrap, ruler

Directions

STEP 1

  • Print out patterns onto copy paper. Transfer patterns onto craft foam and cut out as indicated.

Mobile

  • 1. Drill holes 1/2” from one end and in center of each dowel. Adhere dowels into “+” shape.
  • 2. Thread fishing line through center holes in dowel, knotting at center. (Note: This will help support “+” shape.)
  • 3. Twist screw eyes into holes on each dowel end and into center hole of mobile (for hanging).

Dragonfly

  • 1. For body, cut recycled tube to 2-1/2” long. Cut down center of tube and trim 1” off length. Tightly roll tube into 1” diameter cylinder; adhere ends. Adhere one ball half to each end.
  • 2. Paint body Navy Blue. Dot body Magnolia White.
  • 3. For antennae, cut chenille stem in half, curl ends, and adhere to head. Adhere eyes to head.
  • 4. Adhere wings to body.

Caterpillar

  • 1. For body, adhere three balls together forming one shape.
  • 2. Paint body Leaf Green. For face (on one end ball), paint mouth Bright Red.
  • 3. For antennae, cut chenille stem in half, curl ends, and adhere to head. Adhere eyes above mouth.
  • 4. For spots, cut small yellow craft foam circles. For legs, cut fourteen 1-1/2” yellow chenille stem lengths.
  • 5. Adhere spots and legs to body. Bend legs at ends for feet.

Bumblebee

  • 1. For body, cut recycled tube to 1-1/4” length. Wrap body with yellow craft foam; trim ends.
  • 2. For middle strip, cut 1/2”x 5-1/2” from black craft foam. Adhere to center of body.
  • 3. Adhere half of ball to each end of body. Paint balls Black.
  • 4. Adhere wings to body.
  • 5. For antennae, cut chenille stem in half, curl ends, and adhere to head. Adhere eyes to head.

Butterfly

  • 1. For body, cut recycled tube to 1-1/4” length. Adhere half of ball to each end of body.
  • 2. Paint head Black and bottom ball Bright Yellow.
  • 3. Wrap body with 1-1/4”x 5-1/2” yellow craft foam strip. Adhere strip to body.
  • 4. Adhere wings to body and eyes to head.
  • 5. For antennae, cut chenille stem in half, curl ends, and adhere to head.

Ladybug

  • 1. For body, cut recycled tube to 1-1/4” length. For head, adhere half of ball to one end.
  • 2. Paint head Black. Paint mouth White.
  • 3. Wrap body with red craft foam and adhere ends. Adhere wings to body.
  • 4. For wing spots, cut small circles from black craft foam. Adhere spots to wings.
  • 5. For antennae, cut chenille stem in half, curl ends, and adhere to head. Adhere eyes to head.

Tip

  • 1. Use foam brush or sponge scrap for greater ease when painting plastic-foam shapes.
