Table Runner

  • 1. For each crazy quilt tie block, cut one 5-1/2” square from muslin and one 2-1/2” square from magenta fabric. Baste magenta square diagonally in center of muslin square.
  • 2. Cut seams from ties, remove fabric inside ties and press flat. Place a piece of tie on top of magenta square with one long raw edge even with raw edge of square. (Note: Right sides of fabric and tie should be facing.) Sew 1/4” from raw edge of tie and magenta square to corners of magenta square. Fold tie piece over so right side is facing up and press. Trim tie piece even with side edges of magenta square. Repeat for next side of magenta square. (Note: Tie piece should be same length as magenta square plus first tie piece.) Work around magenta square, placing a tie piece around each side. Now begin next row working in same way. Continue sewing ties in rows around center until entire muslin square is covered. Trim ties even with edges of muslin square.
  • 3. Make nine more tie blocks, following Step 2.
  • 4. From yellow/gold fabric, cut five 3”x5-1/2” strips, four 3”x13” strips, two 3”x18” strips and two 3”x35-1/2” strips.
  • 5. Using photo for reference, sew 3”x5-1/2” strips between pairs of 5-1/2” squares. Sew 3”x13” strips between assembled pairs of 5-1/2” squares. Sew 3”x35-1/2” strips to sides of assembled runner. Sew 3”x18” strips to top and bottom of assembled runner.
  • 6. Cut rectangles from batting and yellow/gold fabric the same size as runner top. Baste batting to wrong side of runner top.
  • 7. Sew piping around front of runner 1/4” from edges, beginning in a bottom corner, clipping piping seam at corners as you sew.
  • 8. Sew yellow/gold fabric backing to front of runner along piping stitching, leaving 6” open on one side for turning. Trim seam at corners. Turn runner right side out. Hand sew opening closed.
  • 9. To quilt, machine sew through all layers 1/4” from edges of tie squares.
