Spooktacular Sock Lights

Materials

  • Recycled jars, clear glass candle holders, or vases
  • White sock (size depends upon jar size)
  • Buttons, two each: black (ghost & pumpkin); purple (ghost); yellow (pumpkin)
  • Black snaps, two each (small jars only)
  • Lime green rick rack
  • Black embroidery floss
  • White sewing thread

Tools

  • Art Glitter Ultrafine Glitter: Orange, Crystal
  • Tulip Orange 1-step Fashion Dye
  • Needles: sewing, embroidery
  • Aleene’s Original Brush-on Tacky Glue

Basic Supplies

scissors, pencil, plastic trash bag (to cover work surface), rubber gloves, paintbrush

Directions

Ghost Candle Holder

  • 1. Cut piece from foot or top of sock to fit around glass candle holder, cutting off toe and/or heel as needed.
  • 2. Place sock on candle holder. Use pencil to mark placement for button eyes. Cut rick rack for mouth. Adhere rounded rick rack mouth to sock under eyes; let dry. Remove sock from candle holder.
  • 3. Use three strands of black floss and embroidery needle to blanket stitch over rick rack mouth. For eyes, use white thread and sewing needle to sew black and purple buttons onto top of each other on pencil marks. For small jars, sew snaps to buttons.
  • 4. Brush glue around top and bottom cut edges of sock; while still wet, sprinkle with Crystal glitter. Shake off excess glitter. Place sock over candle holder.

Pumpkin Candle Holder

  • 1. Cut piece from foot or top of sock to fit around glass candle holder, cutting off toe and/or heel as needed.
  • 2. Wet sock and wring out excess water. On covered work surface and wearing gloves, follow manufacturer’s instructions to mix Orange dye with water. Saturate sock with dye over plastic bag. (Note: Sock may have mottled appearance.) Let dry.
  • 3. Place sock on candle holder. Use pencil to mark placement for button eyes. Cut rick rack for mouth. Adhere rounded rick rack mouth to sock under eyes; let dry. Remove sock from candle holder.
  • 4. Use three strands of black floss and embroidery needle to blanket stitch over rick rack mouth. For eyes, use white thread and sewing needle to sew black and yellow buttons onto top of each other on pencil marks. For small jars, sew snaps to buttons.
  • 5. Brush glue around top and bottom cut edges on sock; while still wet, sprinkle with Orange glitter. Shake off excess glitter. Place sock over candle holder.

Tip

  • 1. Speed up drying time after dyeing fabric by using a hair dryer on low heat.
