Thanksgiving Welcome Door Crown

Materials

  • Wooden door crown or plaque, 21-1/2”x9”
  • Delta Ceramcoat Acrylic Paints: Antique Gold, Blue Mist, Bungalow Blue, Burnt Umber, Dark Burnt Umber, Dark Forest Green, Dark Goldenrod, Flesh Tan, Georgia Clay, Golden Brown, Light Timberline, Mocha Brown, Nightfall Blue, Payne’s Grey, Poppy Orange, Sandstone, Spice Brown, Spice Tan, Storm Grey, Straw, Timberline, White

Tools

  • Loew-Cornell Golden Taklon Paintbrushes: Series 7300 Flat #2, #4, #8, #10, #12; Series 7550 Wash 1/2”, 1”; Series 7850 Deerfoot 1/4”, 1/2”; Series 7050 Script Liner #1; Series 7350 Liner 6/0, #1; Series 270 Maxine Oval Mop 1”
  • Indoor/outdoor satin acrylic varnish

Basic Supplies

transfer paper, palette, container of water, newspaper (to cover work surface)

Directions

STEP 1

  • Basecoat one side of plaque Chambray Blue; paint edges Nightfall Blue. (Note: For reversible plaque, paint edges in choice of color.) Let dry. Sand and basecoat again.

STEP 2

  • Print out pattern; transfer onto plaque.

STEP 3

  • For sky, use 1” wash brush to wet sky area with clean water. Lightly brush in areas with Bungalow Blue; soften with mop. Repeat, adding soft areas of Straw and Antique Gold. Shade along top edge of plaque Nightfall Blue. Side-load #12 flat with Blue Mist; softly “fluff” in clouds.

STEP 4

  • For back trees, wet areas for back trees in same manner as sky. See Worksheet 1. Use 1/2” deerfoot to stipple foliage Dark Forest Green, Timberline, and Light Timberline. While paint is still wet, stipple over foliage with areas of Georgia Clay, Poppy Orange, Dark Goldenrod, Mocha Brown, Golden Brown, Antique Gold, and Straw. Use 6/0 liner to brush mix Dark Burnt Umber + Burnt Umber; randomly add branches and tree trunks. Let dry. Use #12 flat to shade with mix of Dark Forest Green + Dark Burnt Umber along bottom of trees.

STEP 5

  • For path, use #8 flat and Burnt Umber to wash in path, keeping strokes parallel to horizon line. Shade sides where path meets buildings Dark Burnt Umber.

STEP 6

  • For grass, use 1” wash brush to streak in Dark Forest Green, Timberline, and Light Timberline; use Burnt Umber in areas of cornstalks.

STEP 7

  • For three large trees by buildings, use #1 liner and mix of Burnt Umber + Dark Burnt Umber to line trunks and branches. Use 1/4” deerfoot to stipple leaf foliage lightly with Timberline, Poppy Orange, Dark Goldenrod, Golden Brown, and Straw.

STEP 8

  • For barn, use #12 flat to basecoat Sandstone. Shade streaks with mix of Dark Burnt Umber + Storm Grey. Use 6/0 liner to add Dark Burnt Umber wood graining; add light lines with (1:1) mix of Sandstone + White. Use 1/2” wash brush to shade Dark Burnt Umber mix under roof and along right edge of silo. Highlight right edge of barn White. Use #8 flat to basecoat window and door opening Dark Burnt Umber; shade Payne’s Grey. Use #1 liner to outline window with (1:1) mix of Sandstone + White. Basecoat doors Sandstone; shade Dark Burnt Umber mix. Outline doors Dark Burnt Umber. Paint hinges Payne’s Grey. Use #12 flat to basecoat roof Storm Grey; shade with mix of Dark Burnt Umber + Payne’s Grey and highlight streaks of Sandstone and White.

STEP 9

  • For silo, use #12 flat to basecoat Sandstone. Shade along each side Storm Grey; shade left side again with Payne’s Grey. Highlight center with slip-slap float of White; use mop to soften highlight. Basecoat silo roof Storm Grey. Use 6/0 liner to add Payne’s Grey horizontal lines. Wet silo under roof with clean water; softly float Golden Brown and allow to bleed into water to create rust area.

STEP 10

  • For house, use #10 flat to basecoat sides Flesh Tan and fronts with (1:1) mix of Flesh Tan + Spice Brown. Shade Spice Brown. Repeat with soft float of Burnt Umber. Highlight edge between fronts and sides White. Use #4 flat to basecoat windows Nightfall Blue. Basecoat door with mix of Mocha Brown + Spice Brown. Use 6/0 liner to outline windows and doors with mix of White + touch of Sandstone. Basecoat porch floor with (1:1) mix of Storm Grey + Flesh Tan. Use #1 liner to basecoat porch post and railings White. Basecoat chimney with (1:1) mix of Storm Grey + Payne’s Grey. Paint stones with small dabs of Sandstone, White, and Flesh Tan. Use #12 flat to basecoat roof Storm Grey; shade with mix of Dark Burnt Umber + Payne’s Grey and highlight with streaks of Sandstone and White.

STEP 11

  • For fence, double-load #2 flat with Sandstone and mix of Burnt Umber + Dark Burnt Umber; stroke on post and railings. Use White to highlight post from top down and railings from left sides. If needed, add fine lines of Dark Burnt Umber to define sides of post.

STEP 12

  • For cornstalks and pumpkins, use #1 liner to basecoat stalks with lines of Spice Tan. See Worksheet 2. Repeat with lines of Mocha Brown, Spice Brown, Burnt Umber, Dark Burnt Umber, Antique Gold, Straw, and mix of Flesh Tan, Straw, and White. Use #2 flat to basecoat pumpkins Georgia Clay; highlight Poppy Orange and Dark Goldenrod. Use 1/4” or 1/2” deerfoot and colors used for back trees to stipple bushes at base of silo and house. Basecoat flower pots Georgia Clay; foliage Dark Forest Green and flowers Straw. Use #12 flat to shade under trees, bushes, pumpkins, and cornstalk with brush mix of Burnt Umber, Dark Forest Green, and Spice Brown.

STEP 13

  • For tree on right edge, use #1 liner to basecoat trunk and branches with mix of Dark Burnt Umber and touch of Burnt Umber. Use #4 flat to basecoat leaves Spice Tan; highlight with oranges or golds on palette. For bushes, use 1/2” deerfoot to lightly stipple Timberline, Light Timberline, and Straw. Use 6/0 liner to add Timberline and Light Timberline branches.

STEP 14

  • For “Welcome Friends,” use 1/2” flat to shade with (1:1) mix of Burnt Umber + Spice Brown around band edges. Use #2 flat to basecoat letters with mix of Burnt Umber + touch of Dark Burnt Umber. Use #8 flat to basecoat large leaves Spice Tan; shade bottoms Dark Forest Green and highlight Georgia Clay, Poppy Orange, Antique Gold, and Straw. See Worksheet 4. For vines and veins, use 6/0 liner and Dark Burnt Umber. Dot berries Poppy Orange and add tiny Straw leaves at base of berries. For small dried leaves, use #4 flat and mix of Spice Tan + Spice Brown. Use #1 liner to outline plaque with mix of Spice Tan + Mocha Brown; basecoat side edges of plaque.

STEP 15

  • To finish, erase tracing lines. Apply three coats of varnish.

Tip

  • 1. To side-load, dip flat or angular brush into clear water. Lightly press bristles on paper towel. Dip one corner of brush into paint. Stroke brush back and forth on palette, blending until color spreads evenly halfway across width of brush.
