Easter Bunny & Chick Cans

Materials

  • Recycled soup can
  • Loew-Cornell Woodsies Wooden Shapes: 3-1/4” teardrops, two; 2” teardrops, two; 7/8” teardrops, four; 7/8” ovals, two
  • Wooden items: 3/4” spools, six; 1-1/4” half-eggs, two; 3” heart; 1/2” beads, three
  • White craft foam scrap, 1/4”x1/2”
  • Pom-poms: 1-1/4” white; 1” white, two; 1/2” white, two; 1/4” white, four; 3/8” pink
  • Silver wire, 24-gauge, 12” length

Tools

  • White spray paint
  • Matte-finish spray sealer
  • DecoArt Americana Acrylic Paints: Cadmium Yellow, Lamp Black, Poodleskirt Pink, Sour Apple, White Wash
  • Loew-Cornell La Corneille Paintbrushes: Series 7300 Flat Shader #8, 12; Series 7050 Liner 10/0
  • Drill with small bit
  • Aleene’s Quick Dry Tacky Glue

Basic Supplies

ruler, pencil, foam plate for palette, toothpicks, paper towels, newspaper (to cover work surface)

Directions

Bunny Can

  • 1. Remove can label; wash and dry can.
  • 2. Cover work surface with newspaper. In well-ventilated area, spray paint can white; let dry.
  • 3. Paint wooden spools (legs), half-eggs (bunny slippers), ovals (eyes), large teardrops (ears), and 7/8” teardrops (bunny slipper ears) White Wash. Let dry.
  • 4. Paint 2” teardrops (inner ears) and centers of bunny slipper ears Poodleskirt Pink. Paint heart Sour Apple. Let dry.
  • 5. Insert two toothpicks through hole in each bead. Holding toothpicks at one end, paint one bead each following color: Cadmium Yellow, Poodleskirt Pink, Sour Apple. Let dry.
  • 6. Using liner and Lamp Black, paint line down center of craft foam scrap to create front teeth. Let dry.
  • 7. Adhere bunny slipper ears to bunny slippers as shown. Adhere two 1/4” white pom-poms to front of each slipper for muzzle. Using toothpick and Lamp Black, dot eyes onto each slipper. Set aside slippers and let dry.
  • 8. Adhere 1” pom-poms to one side of can for muzzle. Adhere teeth below muzzle. Adhere pink pom-pom nose above muzzle. Adhere largest white pom-pom to back of can for tail. Let dry.
  • 9. Using handle end of liner, dot Lamp Black pupils onto oval eyes. Adhere eyes to can. Using liner and Lamp Black, paint eyebrows. Let dry.
  • 10. Adhere inner ears to ears; adhere ears inside top edge of can. Let dry.
  • 11. Carefully drill hole in each side of can on opposite sides near top edge for handle. Thread beads onto center of wire length. Wrap wire several times around brush handle at each end of centered beads to secure. Insert wire ends into holes in can; twist ends around main wire to secure.
  • 12. Adhere three spools together for each leg; adhere legs to center bottom of can. Let dry.
  • 13. Adhere bunny’s legs and slippers to heart base as shown; let dry. Adhere 1/2" white pom-pom to end of each bunny slipper for tail; let dry.
  • 14. Spray entire bunny with sealer, if desired; let dry.

Chick Can

  • 1. Remove can label; wash and dry can.
  • 2. Cover work surface with newspaper. In well-ventilated area, spray paint can yellow; let dry.
  • 3. Paint wooden spools (legs), stars (feet), and diamond (beak) Tangerine. Let dry.
  • 4. Paint teardrops (wings) Cadmium Yellow. Paint heart Sour Apple. Let dry.
  • 5. Paint ovals (eyes) White Wash. Let dry. Using photo as guide, paint upper third of each eye (eyelids) Cadmium Yellow; paint Lamp Black pupils. Using toothpick, dot White Wash center onto each pupil. Let dry. Adhere eyes to can 3/8” from top edge. Using liner and Lamp Black, paint eyebrows and line bottom of each eyelid. Let dry.
  • 6. Insert two toothpicks through hole in each bead. Holding toothpicks at one end, paint one bead Tangerine and two beads Cadmium Yellow. Let dry.
  • 7. Paint smaller Poodleskirt Pink diamond in center of beak for mouth opening. Using liner and Boysenberry Pink, outline mouth opening. Paint bottom half of opening (tongue) Boysenberry Pink. Adhere beak to can below eyes. Let dry.
  • 8. Adhere wings to sides of can as shown. Adhere feather scrap to back of can for tail. Tie ribbon bow and adhere to can below beak. Let dry.
  • 9. Carefully drill hole in each side of can on opposite sides near top edge for handle. Thread beads onto center of wire length. Wrap wire several times around brush handle at each end of centered beads to secure. Insert wire ends into holes in can; twist ends around main wire to secure.
  • 10. Adhere three spools together for each leg; adhere legs to center bottom of can. Let dry.
  • 11. Adhere feet to bottom of legs. Adhere feet to heart base as shown; let dry.
  • 12. Spray entire chick with sealer, if desired; let dry.

Tip

  • 1. Cover cans with cardstock or construction paper as an alternative to spray painting.
