Basic Supplies

scissors, cutting mat, rotary cutter, ruler, straight pins, iron and pressing surface, tweezers, pencil

Directions

Note

  • 1. Use embroidery needle for embroidery, tapestry needle to thread lacing braid, and beading needle for attaching beads. To begin stitching, use knot in end of thread. To end thread, run under several previously placed stitches and tie off thread.

Coasters

  • 1. Use mat, rotary cutter, and ruler to cut four 5”x5” and four 4-1/2"x4-1/2" squares from red fabric. Cut four 4"x4" squares from fusible fleece and four 3-7/8"x3-7/8" squares from Peltex. (Note: Set aside 4-1/2" red squares and Peltex squares for finishing.)
  • 2. Use iron to fuse fusible fleece to center back of 5"x5" red fabric squares. Keep fleece edges straight within area. Set aside.
  • 3. Print out pattern onto copy paper. Trace designs as indicated on pattern.
  • 4. Center each tissue paper design on right side of 5” red/fleece fabric square. Pin tissue paper in place. (Note: Use tissue paper method of transferring and stitching pattern onto fabric. Stitch through tissue paper, red fabric, and fusible fleece to back side of fabric. Once tissue paper is removed, stitches will go through red fabric and fleece unless otherwise indicated.)
  • 5. Use white sewing thread to baste around edge of tissue paper and outside of flower.
  • 6. Use one strand of DMC 906 Parrot Green-MD to baste straight lines on border.
  • 7. Use two strands of DMC 906 Parrot Green–MD to stem stitch stems and branches on flower.
  • 8. Use two strands of DMC 907 Parrot Green–LT to double lazy daisy stitch leaves. Make first lazy daisy same size as traced leaf; work smaller second leaf inside first lazy daisy.
  • 9. Use two strands DMC 907 Parrot Green–LT to French Knot base of flower.
  • 10. Use two strands DMC 996 Electric Blue–MD to chain stitch individual flower petals. Keep stitches within traced lines to allow space between petals. For smaller petals, use single chain stitch. Begin each row of stitches at base of petal to create curved tip on petal.
  • 11. Remove white basting thread and gently tear away tissue paper. Use tweezers to remove small pieces of tissue paper.
  • 12. Use two strands of DMC 906 Parrot Green–MD and laced running stitch to work straight lines on border. (Note: Leave basting stitches in place.) Use Blue braid with laced running stitch to lace over and under straight lines on border. (Note: As you lace in and out of running stitches, keep loops as even as possible. End lacing under same thread where you started, taking needle/braid to back side to end thread.)
  • 13. Attach Crayon Yellow Green beads using double-strand of Grey thread with single backstitch bead attachment. Place bead in center of each lacing stitch at top of loop; catch braid with needle/Grey thread within stitch to hold braid in place.
  • 14. Repeat stitching to embroider remaining three coasters.
  • 15. Trim 5"x5" stitched squares to 4-1/2"x4-1/2" squares.
  • 16. Pin reserved 4-1/2"x4-1/2" fabric squares to stitched squares with right sides together. Machine-sew fabric pieces together with 1/4" seam allowance using red thread; leave bottom edge open for turning. Clip corners and trim as needed. Turn square right side out; finger press along edges. Insert Peltex square inside sewn square, fold up 1/4" seam inside coaster, and finger press seam. Trim Peltex if needed. Slipstitch opening closed using red thread and needle.

Tip

  • 1. Check the back side of your work every once in awhile to be sure thread is going through all fabric layers.
