Basic Supplies

scissors, pencil, ruler, iron and pressing surface

Directions

General

  • 1. Print and cut out patterns; cut materials as indicated.
  • 2. Use computer and desired font to print names; transfer to towels, adding swirls at beginning and end. Stem stitch names on towels using four strands bright blue floss for bug and bright purple floss for butterfly.

Butterfly Towel

  • 1. Cut pieces from iron-on adhesive slightly larger than top and bottom wings. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse iron-on adhesive to backs of fabrics. Cut top wings from fused purple and bottom wings from fused pink fabric (along dashed lines). Adhere wings to towel above name on right side (top wing should overlap bottom wing). Use one strand pearl cotton to blanket stitch around outside edges of wings.
  • 2. For antennae, fold 7” rickrack length in half; adhere above wings. Use four strands of floss to blanket stitch over rickrack, going between indentations.
  • 3. Use black pearl cotton to sew yellow buttons to top wings.
  • 4. For binding, cut 3”-wide strips to towel width plus 1” from pink fabric. Place strip across bottom front of towel with right sides together (edge should be even at bottom and extend 1/2” at sides). Sew strip 3/4” from bottom edge of towel. Turn raw edges of strip over to back of towel. Turn long edge under 3/4” (turned edge should be even with stitching on front side). Hand sew turned edges of strip to towel.

Bug Towel

  • 1. Cut pieces from iron-on adhesive slightly larger than head and body. Follow manufacturer’s instruction to fuse iron-on adhesive to backs of fabrics. Cut head from fused blue and body from fused green (along dashed lines).
  • 2. For legs, cut six 4-1/2” black rickrack lengths. Fold pieces in half so both sides are same length. Adhere raw ends under body at placement of leg lines on pattern.
  • 3. For antennae, fold a 5” baby rickrack length in half and adhere above wings. Use four strands of floss to blanket stitch over rickrack, going between indentations.
  • 4. Use black pearl cotton to sew yellow buttons to top of bug.
  • 5. Make binding in same way as Butterfly Towel, using green fabric.
