Crocheted Baby Bibs

Materials

  • Caron Simply Soft Yarn, 1 skein each: Soft Blue (9712), White (9701)
  • Red Heart Super Saver Yarn, 1 skein each: Blue (0886), Petal Pink (0373), Black (312)
  • Black satin ribbon, 5/8”-wide, 1 yd.

Tools

  • Crochet hook, size I
  • Yarn needle
  • Adhesives: fabric glue, hook-and-loop circle fasteners

Directions

All Dressed Up Boy's Bib - Gauge

  • 1. 6 dc = 2”; 4 dc rows = 2-1/2”.

Boy's - Crochet Design (make 2)

  • 1. Row 1: With Soft Blue, ch 22, dc in third ch from hk and in each ch across, ch 3, turn. (21 dc counting turning ch)
  • 2. Rows 2-14: Dc in each dc across, ch 3, turn. (21 dc)
  • 3. Row 15: Dc in next 6 dc, fasten off. Sk next 7 dc on same row, join with sl st in next dc, ch 3, dc in last 6 dc, ch 3, turn. (14 dc counting ch 3 st, 7 unworked dc)
  • 4. Row 16: Dc in next 4 dc, dc last 2 dc tog, ch 3, turn. (6 dc)
  • 5. Rows 17-18: Rep Row 2. (6 dc)
  • 6. Row 19: Dc first 2 dc tog, dc in next dc, dc last 2 dc tog, ch 3, turn. (4 dc)
  • 7. Row 20: Rep Row 2. (4 dc)
  • 8. Row 21: Dc in next dc, dc last 2 dc tog, ch 3, turn. (3 dc)
  • 9. Rows 22-24: Rep Row 2. At end of Row 24, fasten off, turn. (3 dc)
  • 10. Rows 25-33: Attach yarn with sl st in first st of Row 15, ch 3. Rep Rows 16-24. At end of Row 24, fasten off. Press pieces giving bib slightly curved shape on sides at Rows 7 and 8 and center bottom using warm steam iron and placing cloth between iron and bib.

Edging

  • 1. Position two pieces together making sure edges are even.
  • 2. Join Blue with sc in side of Row 24, sc evenly all the way down side of bib working hdc in sides of Rows 7 and 8.
  • 3. Continue with sc down side, sc2tog around corner to give rounded shape; sc across to center of bib. Work hdc in each of center 2 dc, continue with sc across bottom, sc2tog around opposite corner, sc evenly up second side; hdc in ends of Rows 7 and 8.
  • 4. Continue with sc up side of bib and around straps working 2 sc tog on each end of neckline to give rounded shape; continue sc up side and across end of second strap. Join with sl st to first sc; fasten off.
  • 5. Weave in ends. Press edging lightly with warm steam iron placing cloth between bib and iron.
  • 6. Place 2 pieces together making sure edges are even.
  • 7. Join Pink with sc in side of Row 24, sc evenly all way down side of bib working hdc in sides of Rows 7 and 8, continue with sc down side, sc 2 sc tog around corner to give rounded shape, sc across to center of bib, work hdc in each of center 2 dc, continue with sc across bottom, sc 2 sc tog around opposite corner, sc evenly up second side, hdc in ends of Rows 7 and 8, continue with sc up side of bib and around straps working 2 sc tog on each end of neckline to give it a rounded neckline, continue sc up side and across end of second strap, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off. Weave in ends.
  • 8. Press edging lightly with warm steam iron placing double thickness of cloth between bib and iron and being careful not to let iron pass over French Knots.

Collar

  • 1. Left side facing piece:

  • 3. Row 2: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn. (25 sc)
  • 4. Row 3: Sc in next 16 sc, hdc in next 8 sc, 2 hdc in last sc, fasten off. (17 sc, 10 hdc)
  • 5. Right side facing piece:
  • 6. Row 1: Rep Row 1 of left side facing piece, ch 1, turn. (24 sc)
  • 7. Row 2: Sc in each sc across, 2 sc in last sc. (25 sc)
  • 8. Row 3: 2 hdc in first sc, hdc in next 8 sc, sc in last 16 sc, fasten off. (17 sc, 10 hdc)

Necktie

  • 1. Row 1: With Blue, ch 3, sc in second ch from hk and in next ch, ch 1, turn. (2 sc)
  • 2. Row 2: 2 sc in each sc, ch 1, turn. (4 sc)
  • 3. Row 3: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn. (6 sc)
  • 4. Row 4: Sc first 2 sc tog, sc in each of next 2 sc, sc last 2 sc tog, ch 1, turn. (4 sc)
  • 5. Row 5: Sc first 2 sc tog, sc last 2 sc tog, ch 1, turn. (2 sc)

  • 18. Knot: Rep Rows 1-5, fasten off. Press collar and tie pieces lightly with warm steam iron with cloth between iron and pieces.

Assembly

  • 1. Position knot piece on top of necktie piece. With Blue and yarn needle, attach necktie piece to center front of bib, lining up top edges of neckline and top edges of tie and knot pieces.
  • 2. Whipstitch around pieces through all thicknesses, leaving long part of tie to hang free. (Note: Tie can be tacked with single small stitch at center of long part if desired.)
  • 3. Position collar pieces on either side of necktie knot, making sure collar pieces are facing right direction. Line up short end of collar with top edge across end of strap. With yarn needle and White, whipstitch across end of strap through all thicknesses and down neckline. Fasten off. Repeat on other side of collar.
  • 4. Attach fastener discs to top center of left strap, evenly spaced down length of strap, using fabric glue. Repeat process on underside of right strap making sure discs line up with discs on left strap. Let dry thoroughly.

  • 1. 6 dc = 2”; 3 dc rows = 2-1/4”.

Girl - Crochet Design (make 2)

  • 1. Row 1: With Pink, ch 22, dc in third ch from hk and in each ch across, ch 3, turn. (21 dc counting turning ch)

  • 4. Row 16: Dc in next 4 dc, dc last 2 dc tog, ch 3, turn. (6 dc)
  • 5. Rows 17-18: Rep Row 2. (6 dc)
  • 6. Row 19: Dc first 2 dc tog, dc in next dc, dc last 2 dc tog, ch 3, turn. (4 dc)
  • 7. Row 20: Rep Row 2. (4 dc)
  • 8. Row 21: Dc in next dc, dc last 2 dc tog, ch 3, turn. (3 dc)
  • 9. Rows 22-24: Rep Row 2. At end of Row 24 fasten off, turn. (3 dc)
  • 10. Rows 25-33: Attach yarn with sl st in first st of Row 15, ch 3, Rep Rows 16-24. At end of Row 24, fasten off. Press pieces giving bib a slightly curved shape on sides at Rows 7 and 8 and center bottom using warm steam iron and placing double thickness of cloth between iron and bib.

Polka Dots

  • 1. With Black yarn and yarn needle, work French Knots across each row of one of bib pieces, staggering every other row for a pleasing look. Tie each knot securely on back side. (Note: Leave Row 6 free of French Knots for placing ribbon sash. Do not work French Knots in strap area.)

Finishing

  • 1. Using yarn needle, thread ribbon through eye of needle. Bring ribbon down between two pieces of bib at right side of Row 6 between edging and side of bib.
  • 2. Weave ribbon between front and back pieces from right to left; bring needle out at left side of Row 6 between side of bib and edging on opposite side.
  • 3. Adjust ribbon so both ends are even. Wrap each side of ribbon across front of bib, bringing each end back to front of dc at center of bib. (Note: Do this for both pieces of ribbon. This will hold ribbon securely in place at center front.) Tie ribbon in bow. Trim ends at angle.
  • 4. Attach fastener discs to top center of left strap, evenly spaced down length of strap, using fabric glue. Repeat process on underside of right strap making sure discs line up with discs on left strap. Let dry thoroughly.
