Stamped Metal Key Chains
- Copper discs, 18-gauge: 7/8” (DAD); 1” (GRANDPA)
- Turquoise beads, 1/2” to 5/8” diameter, two
- Split rings, two each: 1-1/4”, 1/2”
- Silver headpins, 2”, two
- Optional: Sterling silver disc, 22-gauge, 7/16”; additional split rings, 1/2”, two
- Block uppercase letter stamp set for metal, 1/8”
- Swirl stamp for metal, 5/16”
- Optional: Heart stamp for metal, 3/16”
- Steel bench block, 2-1/2”x2-1/2”
- Hole punch for metal, 2.3mm
- Ball peen hammer and regular hammer
- Needle-nose pliers
black permanent marker, fine steel wool
- Position copper discs on steel bench block. Lightly hammer edges and surface on both sides of discs with rounded end of ball peen hammer to create texture.
- Mark dot in center of each copper disc on front side using black marker. Using regular hammer, stamp center letter at dot (“N” for GRANDPA or “A” for DAD).
- Stamp remaining letters out from center to complete word. (Note: Letters for GRANDPA will need to be stamped close together to fit on disc.)
- Stamp swirl design centered above and below word with outside end of swirl close to edge of disc.
- Draw over stamped impressions with black permanent marker making sure to fill all grooves in with black. Rub steel wool back and forth over disc to remove excess black marker and polish disc.
- Punch hole in center top of disc close to edge.
- If adding sterling silver disc, stamp heart on disc, leaving room at top for hole; punch hole above heart. Fill in stamped heart with marker and rub with steel wool.
- Slide copper and sterling silver discs on 1/2” split rings. Slide 1/2” split rings on 1-1/4” split ring.
- Insert bead on 2” headpin. Bend top of headpin over at 45º angle 1/2” from top of bead using needle-nose pliers. Wrap bent end of headpin around needle-nose pliers at top of bead several times, forming wire loop above bead. If needed, trim wire close to wrapping using cutter on needle-nose pliers. Bend end of wire around top of bead. Slide loop on bead directly onto 1-1/4” split ring or onto 1/2” split ring. Slide 1/2” split ring onto 1-1/4” split ring with discs.
- 1. Make sure to use a hole punch for metal that is sturdy enough to go through 18-gauge metal. If hole punch is not heavy duty enough, use a lightweight copper disc like 20- or 22-gauge
