Directions

Preparation

  • 1. Lightly sand surface and wipe dust. Use foam brush to apply two coats Lamp Black, sanding between coats.
  • 2. Print out pattern; transfer basic details onto switch plate.
  • 3. Wash Buttermilk on leaves, pumpkins, and squash, mopping as you go to soften and blend. Wash a second light coat if needed to even out first coat.

Artist’s Tips & Techniques

  • 1. Overlaying Washes: This technique involves painting one wash over another in successive layers in order to build up a rich depth of color. Use the ultra round to apply all washes as it holds a tremendous amount of water. Mop after each wash to blend and soften. Allow each layer to dry before applying the next. Floating With Ultra Round Brush: The ultra round is a combination of a round and a liner, and the bristles hold a large amount of paint or paint/water mixture, while the point allows you to get into the smallest areas. Treat the brush the same way you would a flat or angular brush. Dip the brush into water, blot as you would a flat, and dip the tip into paint. Work the paint back and forth into the tip once or twice. Lay the tip up against the area you want to float. Hold the brush almost parallel to the surface and press down slightly to draw the water as you go. Mop if needed.

Painting Instructions

  • 1. Refer to painting chart.

Pumpkins and Squash

  • 1. Wash Burnt Orange onto pumpkins and mop; repeat. Wash Antique Gold along left side of small pumpkin and mop. Wash True Red along right side of large pumpkin and mop. Wash stems Antique Gold; add Hauser Med. Green lines. Float Burnt Umber section lines on both pumpkins.
  • 2. Wash Flesh Tone onto butternut squash and mop; repeat. Shading Flesh along right side of squash and paint stem Burnt Umber.
  • 3. Shade Burnt Umber along right side of pumpkins and squash; shade right side of large pumpkin behind squash, and on left side of large pumpkin behind small pumpkin.

Leaves

  • 1. Top Leaf: Wash Hauser Med. Green on left bottom, blend and wash Antique Gold at top, and wash True Red on right bottom, mopping as you go; there should be no distinct lines between colors.
  • 2. Large Leaf at Right: Wash Hauser Med. Green on left bottom, blend and wash Antique Gold at top and along right side, ending with a touch of Burnt Umber wash at bottom, mopping as you go. Shade large leaf behind large pumpkin and squash with Burnt Umber.
  • 3. Small Leaf at Left: Wash Burnt Umber with a touch of True Red wash at bottom.
  • 4. For veins, use tip of ultra round and thinned Burnt Umber. Use thinned Antique Gold to add pumpkin vine.

Floor and Border

  • 1. Alternate washes of Colonial Green and Honey Brown diamonds; mop and apply second light wash. Use tip of ultra round to paint Shading Flesh border line. Lightly float Lamp Black on floor to inside edges of border line. Use stylus to dot Shading Flesh in center of each diamond.

Finishing

  • 1. Paint screw heads Buttermilk. Wash Burnt Orange on screw head that fits inside pumpkin and wash Hauser Med. Green on other.
  • 2. Spatter entire surface Shading Flesh. Apply two to three varnish coats.
