Flowerpot Trio - Candle Holders

Materials

  • Terra cotta pots, 4”x5” with 1-3/4” rim, three

Directions

Preparation

  • 1. Sand any raised areas, if needed; wipe dust. Turn pots over so bottom is now top. Use sea silk sponge and Dk. Chocolate to sponge main body of pots. Repeat. Use same color to paint rims.
  • 2. Print out patterns; transfer basic details.

Painting Instructions

  • 1. Refer to painting chart.

Stems and Leaves

  • 1. (Note: Paint all stems and leaves on pots in same manner.) Use dry #4 liner and Lemonade to line stems and stroke in leaves. (Note: It’s ok for these to be streaky looking.) Use same brush and Hauser Med. Green to shade a line down right side of stem and along bottom of leaves; add vein lines. Use 1/4” angular shader and mix of Hauser Med. Green + Calypso Blue (2:1) to shade base of leaves. Use liner and Yellow Green to add highlight line along top edge of leaves. Let dry and line again; over-stroke tips with Bright Yellow.

Flowers

  • 1. Paint in order given on painting chart
  • 2. Flower #1: Use #4 filbert and Bahama Blue to base petals. Use script liner and Sapphire to add detailing. Float Calypso Blue along bottom of petals around flower center; darken with Sapphire. Use mix of Warm White + Bahama Blue (3:1) to outline petals. Use stylus and Warm White to tap in graduating dots along petal edges.
  • 3. Flower Centers: (Note: Paint all flower centers in same manner.) Base Moon Yellow; shade Cadmium Orange along outer edges.
  • 4. Push-hard Dots: (Note: All dots around flower centers are done in same manner.) Use large end of stylus to dot Dk. Chocolate around outer edges of centers. Let dry slightly, then use small end of stylus to push hard in center of each dot.
  • 5. Flower #1 Center: Use Peony Pink to line cross-hatchings. Use mix of Warm White + Peony Pink (3:1) to dry brush highlight in center. Shade around outer edges. Add push-hard dots in center of cross-hatchings: first with Bright Yellow, then with Warm White. Add push-hard dot in very center with Electric Pink, then Bright Yellow. Flower #2: Base petals with equal mix of Warm White + Electric Pink. Use equal mix of Peony Pink + Cadmium Orange to line petal details and to shade bottom of petals around flower center. Outline petals edges.
  • 6. Warm White. Paint flower center. Add Calypso Blue swirl line. Dry brush center Bahama Blue; shade around outer edges. Add push-hard dot in very center with Bright Yellow, then Cadmium Orange.
  • 7. Flower #3: Base petals Bahama Blue. Use script liner and thinned Calypso Blue to add swirls. Shade Sapphire along bottom of petals around flower center; outline petal edges. Paint and shade flower center. Tap graduating Warm White dots inside flower center. Add push-hard dot in very center with Cadmium Orange, then Bright Yellow.
  • 8. Flower #4: Base petals, add details, and shade bottom of petals around flower center in same manner as “Flower #2”. Paint center in same manner as “Flower #3”. Tap graduating Electric Pink dots along petal edges.
  • 9. Flower #5: Base petals Calypso Blue. Use #4 filbert and mix of Warm White + Calypso Blue (2:1) to dry brush petals pulling from outer edges in. Pick up Warm White and dry brush highlights along petal edges. Use equal mix of Calypso Blue + Sapphire to shade bottom of petals around flower center. Loosely outline petal edges Bahama Blue; over-stroke outer edges with Warm White highlight. Paint and shade flower center.
  • 10. For eyes, add push-hard dots of Warm White and then Dk. Chocolate. Line mouth Dk. Chocolate.
  • 11. Flower #6 (not shown on worksheet): Base petals Peony Pink. Load crescent brush with mix of Warm White + Electric Pink (2:1); dry brush petals pulling from outer edges in. Pick up Warm White and dry brush highlights along petal edges. Use mix of Peony Pink + Cadmium Yellow (2:1) to shade bottom of petals around flower center. Loosely outline petal edges with mix of Warm White + Electric Pink (3:1); over-stroke outer edges with Warm White highlight. Paint and shade flower center. Paint eyes and mouth in same manner as “Flower #5”.

Pot Rims

  • 1. Use ruler to mark off 1/2” border around bottom of each rim.
  • 2. Pot #1: Use 10” or 12” shader to basecoat top part of rim Bahama Blue. Use 3/8” angular shader and equal mix of Calypso Blue + Sapphire to shade around top edge of rim. Base bottom section of rim with equal mix of Warm White + Electric Pink. Use #2 liner to add Cadmium Red squiggly line between sections. Use push-hard technique to tap in Lemonade dots.
  • 3. Pot #2: Base top part of rim with mix of Lemonade + Yellow Green (2:1); use equal mix of Yellow Green + Hauser Med. Green to shade along top edge of rim. Base bottom section of rim Bahama Blue. Add Calypso Blue squiggly line. Add push-hard dots with equal mix of Warm White + Electric Pink.
  • 4. Pot #3: Base top part of rim with equal mix of Warm White + Electric Pink; use equal mix of Peony Pink + Cadmium Orange to shade along top edge of rim. Base bottom section of rim Lemonade. Add Hauser Med. Green squiggly line. Add push-hard dots of Bahama Blue.

Finishing

  • 1. Apply several coats varnish. Place glass candle cups and votives on top.
