Directions

Artist's Tips

  • 1. When painting more than one basecoat, change direction of brush strokes on each layer to give a smoother looking finish. Use appropriate size shader for area unless otherwise instructed.

Preparation

  • 1. Use foam brush and Titanium White to undercoat sides and bottoms of canisters and sides and top of turntable. Use extra-fine grit sandpaper to lightly sand basecoated areas; wipe dust. Base lids Licorice.
  • 2. Undercoat knobs English Mustard; base Inca Gold.
  • 3. Base entire exterior sides and bottom of canisters as follows: Pet Shop, Barn Wood; Café, undercoat English Mustard and base Lemonade; Bakery, Tapioca; Art Shop, Basil Green.
  • 4. Print out patterns; transfer basic pattern lines making note of how canisters sit in carousel to transfer onto outer two sides. (Transfer details as needed.)

Pet Shop

  • 1. Use Masking Fluid and Supernib to apply fluid along each brick line; let dry. Base bricks Terra Cotta. When dry, use finger to peel off masking fluid. Shade Coffee Bean along lower edge of brick and highlight Tapioca along top. Shade Coffee Bean behind windows, door, and bush.
  • 2. Base steps Lt. Gray; shade Barn Wood and highlight Tapioca. Base black areas of windows Wrought Iron. For windows on either side of door, base floor and inside walls Tapioca; shade Camel. Use pointed round to base all window and door frames Buttercup; shade English Mustard. Add English Mustard diagonal lines to frame corners.
  • 3. Base door trim Tapioca. Use Coffee Bean to line top, right side, and bottom edges of door glass. Use Camel to shade interior edges of door trim; add diagonal lines to corners.
  • 4. Use English Mustard to line left raw edge of door. Add thin Wrought Iron line between door frame and trim. Base wood floor at door entrance English Mustard applying only one coat where floor appears through glass. Use liner to add Coffee Bean panel lines; add Tapioca wood grain lines. Use liner to base door handle English Mustard; shade Coffee Bean and highlight Tapioca.
  • 5. Base door sign Winter White; shade sides English Mustard. Base door and window shades Basil Green; shade Old Ivy along tops and sides, and highlight Tapioca along bottom. Add Old Ivy stitch lines 1/8" from bottom of shades. Add random washy Tapioca streaks to create ripples in shades. Use Winter White to paint "PETS" on shade and large window, and to add string and ring on shade. Paint "OPEN" on door sign Licorice.
  • 6. Base fire hydrant Engine Red; shade edges Wrought Iron and highlight Winter White.
  • 7. Use pointed round to base dog in doorway Winter White; shade Lt. Gray. Use liner and Coffee Bean to paint hair tuft, ears, muzzle, paws, and spot; highlight Tapioca and shade Wrought Iron. Use Licorice and liner to outline eyes, dot pupils, paint nose, and mouth line. Line collar True Blue; shade Wrought Iron.
  • 8. Use pointed round and Camel to base paw prints on both windows; shade Coffee Bean and highlight Winter White.
  • 9. Use pointed round to base top cat Lemonade; shade Coffee Bean and highlight Tapioca. Use Coffee Bean to base muzzle and fur "V's". Use liner and Licorice to paint nose and dot eyes. Paint whiskers Winter White. Use pointed round to base bottom cat Camel; shade Coffee Bean and highlight Lemonade. Paint muzzle Coffee Bean. Use Licorice to paint nose and to dot eyes; paint whiskers Winter White. Use pointed round and English Mustard to paint cat ledges and wall support; shade Coffee Bean.
  • 10. Use pointed round to base parrot Engine Red. Paint wings True Blue; use liner to add Lemonade stripes. Use liner to paint face area Winter White. Base beak Lemonade; shade English Mustard. Use Licorice to paint area around beak and to dot eyes. Paint perch and cage bottom Camel; shade Coffee Bean and highlight Lemonade. Use liner and Lemonade to paint curved claws and swing. Use Lemonade to paint cage wires, swag rings, and hanger; shade Camel.
  • 11. Use round brush to base snake Old Ivy; shade Wrought Iron and highlight Lemonade. Dot eye Engine Red. Line tongue Lemonade.
  • 12. Base sign under large window Winter White; shade Lt. Gray. Paint wording Licorice. For bush, use old flat brush to lightly tap Wrought Iron along left and right sides; while wet, tap in Old Ivy blending colors together. Tap Basil Green to highlight.
  • 13. Base puppy in window Butter Pecan; shade Coffee Bean and highlight Tapioca. Paint muzzle English Mustard. Use liner to paint eyes Winter White; use Coffee Bean to outline eyes and to line eyelids and eyebrows. Use liner to paint hair tuft English Mustard; add streaks of Coffee Bean. Paint pupils, nose, and mouth line Licorice. Paint tongue Engine Red; highlight Winter White.

Café

  • 1. Base step Lt. Gray; shade Barn Wood then shade Wrought Iron under tablecloth.
  • 2. Paint black areas of windows Wrought Iron. Base awning stripes alternately in Terra Cotta and Basil Green. Float Lemonade above flap line on green sections and English Mustard on orange sections. Then shade Coffee Bean below flap line of orange sections and Old Ivy on green sections. Use shading colors to shade along top of awning. Shade Old Ivy along left and right sides of awning.
  • 3. Use pointed round to base chair cushions Basil Green; add Lemonade pinstripes on plaid design. Shade Old Ivy on cushions behind tablecloth; highlight cushions Lemonade. Undercoat metal legs and support English Mustard; base Inca Gold and dot chair tops.
  • 4. For café front, base walls on either side of chairs Buttercup; shade English Mustard in corners, along woodwork areas and under awning, and shade farthest section on right Coffee Bean. Where walls meet on right, highlight Tapioca along left of "corner". Shade Teddy Bear Tan on wall under chairs. Base tablecloths Winter White; shade Lt. Gray.
  • 5. Base door and window woodwork Tapioca; randomly wash Barn Wood. Shade woodwork under awning with mix of Wrought Iron + Tapioca (1:1). Door frame is background basecoat; shade Coffee Bean under awning. Use English Mustard to line left raw edge of door; add thin Wrought Iron line between door frame and trim. Use Tapioca to line right side and bottom edge of door glass. Add Buttercup diagonal lines to door frame corners. Base fork handle Wrought Iron; highlight Tapioca and line Teddy Bear Tan shadow along left side.
  • 6. Use Teddy Bear Tan to base inside and outside floors; add Terra Cotta wood grain lines and mix of Wrought Iron + Terra Cotta (1:1) panel lines. Shade Coffee Bean along upper edges of flooring and under door.
  • 7. For large bushes, use old flat brush to tap Wrought Iron along left side of left bush and along right side of right bush; while wet, tap in Old Ivy blending colors together. Tap Basil Green and Buttercup to highlight. Repeat same for small bush. Base bush pot Terra Cotta; shade Coffee Bean and use pointed round to add Lemonade highlight.
  • 8. Use liner to paint Tapioca lettering in window and Licorice to paint "CAFÉ" above awning. For bottle and glasses, use liner brush for small areas and pointed round for larger areas. Undercoat bottle and glasses Lemonade. Base one coat Titanium White over glasses; shade Lt. Gray along top and sides. Add Lt. Gray shadow under glass base and angled stem shadow, and add bottle shadow. Base label with one coat Titanium White; shade sides Lt. Gray nd use liner to tap in suggested wording. Base bottle glass one coat Old Ivy; shade Wrought Iron. Add tiny Lemonade reflection lines. Undercoat bottle stopper English Mustard; base Inca Gold.

Bakery

  • 1. Undercoat brick areas Barn Wood. Follow first paragraph of Pet Shop to paint mortar and bricks. Shade Coffee Bean along brick edges; add crack lines. Use Teddy Bear Tan to shade behind door, windows, awnings, bushes, and to shade along brick edges. Base steps Lt. Gray; shade Barn Wood and highlight Winter White.
  • 2. Paint black areas of windows Wrought Iron. Base inside walls and window ledge Butter Pecan; shade Coffee Bean and highlight Tapioca. Line corners Coffee Bean. Add Coffee Bean awning shadows on walls. Use pointed round to base window trims Basil Green; shade Old Ivy along inside edges.
  • 3. For small window, base cake Winter White; shade Lt. Gray. Add Winter White dip dots for edging and trim. Use liner to paint cake topper Winter White; shade bell Lt. Gray. Paint cake plate Buttercup; shade English Mustard and highlight Lemonade. Add Coffee Bean line under cake plate. Add Coffee Bean cake shadow on ledge. Paint window wording Winter White.
  • 4. For large window, paint cake and cake topper in same manner as small window. Base bread Camel; shade English Mustard and highlight Tapioca. Base birthday cake Lemonade; shade English Mustard and highlight Tapioca. Use pointed round to base stands Terra Cotta; shade Coffee Bean and highlight Tapioca. Add Coffee Bean shadows on ledge. Base sign Winter White; shade back easel Lt. Gray. Add Licorice wording. Paint "BAKERY" Winter White. Base both awnings Lemonade; shade English Mustard; highlight Tapioca.
  • 5. Base door frame Butter Pecan; shade Coffee Bean and highlight Tapioca.
  • 6. Use Coffee Bean to line glass edges and add diagonal lines to door frame corners; shade diagonal corners. Use Winter White to paint door sign and string; shade sign sides Teddy Bear Tan. Paint wording Licorice. Paint door trim Basil Green; shade Old Ivy. Shade angel door trim lines Old Ivy. Use liner to undercoat "door whisk knob" English Mustard. Base Inca Gold; shade Coffee Bean and highlight Tapioca.
  • 7. Base sign Butter Pecan; shade Coffee Bean and highlight Tapioca. Outline sign Coffee Bean. Paint wording Licorice.
  • 8. Paint bushes in same manner as Pet Shop.

Art Shop

  • 1. Base steps Lt. Gray; shade Wrought Iron and highlight Winter White. Paint black areas of windows Wrought Iron. Base white areas of semi-circle windows Winter White; shade Lt. Gray along left side. Use Wrought Iron to outline semi-circle windows and to add window details. Paint all window frames Camel. Shade English Mustard behind window and door frames, omitting door bottom, and behind steps and bushes.
  • 2. Base door frame Teddy Bear Tan; shade outer edges Coffee Bean and highlight inner edges Camel. Add Tapioca highlight corner angles and shade Coffee Bean. Use liner to streak Coffee Bean and Tapioca wood grain lines; outline door Coffee Bean. Paint door wording Winter White. Use liner to paint "paintbrush handle" Winter White; shade Wrought Iron along left side. Base bristles Licorice; add Winter White highlight lines. Tip brush end with Engine Red; highlight Winter White. Undercoat ferrule English Mustard; base Inca Gold. Line Coffee Bean door handle shadow on left side of handle.
  • 3. For small window, use Coffee Bean to outline window; add angle lines to frame corners. Paint window ledge and inside wall in same manner as door frame. Paint wording Winter White. Base palette Camel; shade Butter Pecan and highlight Tapioca. Use liner to streak Coffee Bean wood grain lines. Use pointed round to tap paint blotches in Buttercup, Engine Red, True Blue, and Old Ivy. Add Winter White highlight line to left of each blotch. Line Coffee Bean along right side of each blotch. Base brush handles Coffee Bean; shade Wrought Iron and highlight Tapioca. Paint bristles and ferrules in same manner as door handle. Tip end of one brush on palette Buttercup and other Engine Red; highlight each Winter White.
  • 4. Paint canvas Winter White; shade Lt. Grey. Paint corner True Blue; shade Wrought Iron. Add washy Lt. Grey streaks. Paint paintbrush in same manner as previous brushes omitting paint blotch. Use pointed round to base paint lid Lt. Gray; shade Wrought Iron and highlight Winter White. Base paint container Buttercup; shade Teddy Bear Tan and highlight Winter White. Paint wording Licorice. Add Lt. Grey paintbrush shadow.
  • 5. For large window, follow small window instructions to outline glass, add frame corners, to paint window ledge and inside walls, to paint palette, to paint blotches, and to paint brushes, substituting red for True Blue on one end of brush. Paint "Supplies" and "Classes" with Winter White. Use pointed round to paint "A" Buttercup, "R" Engine Red, and "T" True Blue; outline each with Winter White.
  • 6. Paint bushes in same manner as Pet Shop.

Turntable

  • 1. Use sponge brush to undercoat sides and top edge Barn Wood. Use Masking Fluid and Supernib to randomly apply mortar shapes. Let dry. Use sea sponge to sponge Coffee Bean, Butter Pecan, and Teddy Bear Tan. When dry, use finger to peel off masking fluid. Randomly shade Coffee Bean and highlight Tapioca on some stones.

Finishing

  • 1. Lightly wash Tapioca reflection lines on windows. Use sponge brush to apply several sealer coats.
