Four Seasons Tree: Spring & Summer

Materials

  • Duro-Art Stretched Canvas, 12”x20”, two
  • DecoArt Americana Acrylic Paints: Baby Blue, Burnt Umber, Butter, Crimson Tide, Dragon Fruit, Espresso, Foliage Green, Hauser Dark Green, Hauser Medium Green, Honey Brown, Lamp Black, Light Cinnamon, Margarita, Mustard Seed, Pink Chiffon, Poodleskirt Pink, Soft Blue, Traditional Raw Umber, Victorian Blue, Warm White, Winter Blue

Tools

  • Loew-Cornell La Corneille Paintbrushes: Series 7300 Flat Shader #6, #12; Series 7550 Glaze 1”; Series 7200 Fan #2; Series 7350 Liner 10/0; Series 7000 Round #4

Basic Supplies

tracing paper, pencil, palette, water basin, paper towels, gray graphite paper, stylus, newspaper (to cover work surface)

Directions

STEP 1

  • Print out patterns. Transfer pattern on canvas using graphite paper and stylus. Use brush to accommodate size of area to paint. To brush mixture, dip brush into paint color and apply to canvas; immediately pick up another color to blend into wet paint on canvas.

Spring Tree

  • 1. Paint sky with brush mixture of Warm White, Soft Blue, and Baby Blue painting in horizontal direction.
  • 2. Use glaze brush to add Warm White clouds by pouncing brush up and down on surface to achieve fluffy clouds. While paint is wet, blend out bottom of clouds to soften into sky.
  • 3. Paint grass with brush mixture of Margarita, Hauser Medium Green, and Foliage Green with lighter greens in background area. Blend so colors don’t have patchy appearance
  • 4. Using blend of grass colors and rake brush, paint background trees. Touch in Warm White and Pink Chiffon for blossoms.
  • 5. Paint tree trunk Burnt Umber and shade Traditional Raw Umber; highlight Honey Brown on limbs and twigs.
  • 6. Use fan brush to tap on various shades of pinks for blossoms on tree limbs and randomly highlight blossom clusters Warm White.
  • 7. Use liner brush and Honey Brown to add heart to tree and place initials within heart.
  • 8. Use liner brush to paint swing rope Burnt Umber with random Honey Brown highlights.
  • 9. Paint swing seat Honey Brown and highlight on right side Butter; shade on front side Burnt Umber.
  • 10. Paint leaves and stems Foliage Green and shade Hauser Dark Green; highlight Margarita.
  • 11. Paint tulips Poodleskirt Pink and shade Dragon Fruit; highlight Pink Chiffon.
  • 12. Use rake brush to add grass at base of tree, tulips, and in background with Foliage Green, Hauser Medium Green, and Hauser Dark Green. In background “grass,” touch in Poodleskirt Pink for distant flowers.
  • 13. Add Lamp Black “V” of flying geese in sky. Let dry.

Summer Tree

  • 1. Paint sky with brush mixture of Warm White, Soft Blue, and Baby Blue painting in horizontal direction.
  • 2. Use glaze brush to add Warm White clouds by pouncing brush up and down on surface to achieve fluffy clouds. While paint is wet, blend out bottom of clouds to soften into sky.
  • 3. Paint lake Victorian Blue, Winter Blue, and Warm White and add lines of Warm White.
  • 4. Paint grass with brush mixture of Hauser Medium Green, Hauser Dark Green, and Foliage Green with lighter greens in the background area and darker green in foreground. Blend so colors don’t have patchy appearance.
  • 5. Paint blanket Mustard Seed and randomly add Honey Brown shadows.
  • 6. Basecoat basket Honey Brown; add weave lines Light Cinnamon; highlight with Butter on right side and shade along blanket Burnt Umber.
  • 7. Paint label on wine bottle Warm White; shade on left side Butter. Paint wine bottle Hauser Medium Green; shade Hauser Dark Green and highlight Butter. Paint wine bottle cork Honey Brown; shade Light Cinnamon and highlight Butter.
  • 8. Paint tree trunk and branches Burnt Umber; shade Traditional Raw Umber and highlight Honey Brown. Using fan brush, tap on leaves Foliage Green, Hauser Medium Green, and Hauser Dark Green.
  • 9. Paint bottom of boat Honey Brown; shade Light Cinnamon and highlight Butter. Paint sails Warm White with some random touches of Butter. Paint mast Burnt Umber and flag Crimson Tide.
  • 10. Use rake to add grass in Foliage Green and Hauser Dark Green. Let dry.

Tip

  • 1. When using rake brush, pull brush upward to achieve “streaky” look.
