Australian Gecko

Materials

  • Green t-shirt
  • Kid-size green garden gloves
  • Felt: white, green, black, pink
  • Wooden circles, 10 1”
  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • DecoArt Americana Acrylic Paint: Leaf Green
  • Tulip 3-D Fashion Paint: White, Green
  • Black cording, 15” length

Tools

  • Hole punch
  • Aleene’s: Original Tacky Glue, Fabric Fusion
  • Scissors
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Black marker
  • Safety pin
  • Newspaper (to cover work surface)

Directions

STEP 1

  • For stomach, measure and cut white felt rectangle slightly smaller than green t-shirt. Cut small half-circle (neck) from top of white felt rectangle.

STEP 2

  • Glue stomach on center of green t-shirt. Let dry.

STEP 3

  • For tail, measure and cut two 5”x25” green felt strips. Glue strips together along both long edges. Let dry. Carefully turn tail inside out. Stuff tail with fiberfill stuffing. Glue short ends closed. Let dry.

STEP 4

  • Cut mask shape from green felt. See photo. Cut eye holes in mask.

STEP 5

  • For eyes, measure and cut two 3-1/2” black felt circles and two 1” white felt circles. Glue white circles on eyes. Glue eyes on mask.

STEP 6

  • Measure and cut two 1” black felt circles (nostrils). Glue nostrils below eyes on mask.

STEP 7

  • Print and cut out pattern. Cut mouth from white and pink felt. Glue mouth below nostrils on mask. Let dry.

STEP 8

  • Use hole punch to punch holes on ends of mask. Measure and cut 15” black cording length. Tie cording ends through holes on mask. Knot ends. Adjust size as needed.

STEP 9

  • On covered work surface, paint wooden circles (fingertips) Leaf Green. Let dry. Use black marker to outline edges of fingertips. Glue fingertips on gloves. Let dry.

STEP 10

  • To wear, use safety pin to pin tail on back of green shorts or sweatpants.

Tip

  • 1. Create a sign with your favorite Australian saying like “G’day Mate!” from recycled cardboard.
