Dye Techniques

Materials

  • White cotton t-shirts or white cotton fabric
  • Tulip: Dye Techniques Kit, Dye Surface Cover, Fashion Form

Tools

  • Aluminum foil
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Foam brush
  • Foam plate

Directions

STEP 1

  • Wash t-shirts or fabric in washing machine. Measure and cut 6” squares from t-shirts or fabric.

STEP 2

  • Cover work surface with surface cover. Wearing gloves, follow manufacturer’s instructions to mix dyes in bottles.

STEP 3

  • For Shibori technique, position fabric flat on work surface. Scrunch fabric. Squeeze dye over fabric. Spray fabric using spray bottle.

STEP 4

  • For Batik technique, squeeze dye onto aluminum foil. Remove backing from stencil and press on fabric. Dab foam brush in dye and brush on fabric over stencil. Let dry. Use spray bottle to spray dye over stenciled design. Remove stencil.

STEP 5

  • For Brush technique, squeeze dye onto foam plate. Use foam brush to paint fabric in desired design.

STEP 6

  • For Urbanesque technique, squeeze dye onto separate foam plates. Use foam brush to paint fabric, allowing colors to bleed together.

STEP 7

  • For Spray technique, crumple fabric on work surface. Use spray bottles with desired dye colors to spray fabric.

Shibori

  • 1. Shibori is a Japanese dye technique that creates a pattern by binding, stitching, folding, twisting, or compressing the fabric.

Batik

  • 1. Batik is a Japanese dye technique that traditionally uses wax to create an area of resist (where dye isn’t able to saturate fabric), leaving behind original fabric color. Batik can also be simplified by using stencils to create an area of resist as in this project.

Brush

  • 1. Brush technique simply means using a foam brush or paintbrush to brush dye on fabric.

Spray

  • 1. Spray technique is using a spray bottle to spray dye on fabric.

Urbanesque

  • 1. Urbanesque is a technique that mimics the “graffiti-style” of urban areas and is created by brushing on fabric.

Note

  • 1. Adults, help kids when mixing dyes.
