Crocheted Mitered Square Scarf

Materials

  • Berroco Vintage Medium Weight Yarn, skeins: Coriander (5147), two; Mistletoe (5152), one; Sloe Berry (5184), one; Vintage Colors Medium Weight Oasis (5222) Yarn, 1 skein

Tools

  • Crochet hook, size I-9 or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Tapestry needle

Directions

Gauge

  • 1. Each square is approximately 3-1/2” after blocking. Gauge is not critical for this pattern.

Note

  • 1. Coriander (A), Mistletoe (B), Sloe Berry (C), Oasis (D) throughout.

First Square

  • 1. With A, ch 21.
  • 2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 8 ch, sc2tog, sc in each sc to end. Ch 1, turn. (19 sc, 9 on either side of a central decrease)
  • 3. Row 2: Sc in each of 1st 8 sc, sc3tog, sc in each sc to end. Ch 1, turn. (17 sc, 8 on either side of a central decrease)
  • 4. Rows 3-5: Sc in each sc until 1 sc remains before decrease, sc3tog, sc in each sc to end. After Rows 3 & 4, ch 1, turn; after Row 5, change to B, ch 1, turn.
  • 5. With B, rep Row 3 until 3 sc remain. Each row will have 2 less sts than the row before.
  • 6. Final Row: Sc3tog. End off.

Second Square

  • 1. Insert hook in the bottom right ch of the First Square, with A, yo, pull it through. Ch 11.
  • 2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 8 ch, sc2tog over the last ch of the ch-11 and the adjacent side of the 1st row of the First Square, work 9 more sc evenly spaced to top right corner of First Square. Ch 1, turn. (19 sc, 9 on either side of a central decrease)
  • 3. Rep First Square instructions from Row 2–end, using C as the accent color.

Third Square

  • 1. Insert hook in outside left top ch of First Square, with A, yo, pull it through. Ch 11.
  • 2. Rep all instructions of Second Square using B as accent color.

Fourth Square

  • 1. Insert hook in bottom right outside ch of Second Square, with A, yo, pull it through. Ch 11.
  • 2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 8 ch, sc2tog over last ch of ch-11 and side of first row of Second Square, work 9 more sc evenly spaced to top right corner of Second Square. Ch 1, turn. (19 sc, 9 on either side of a central decrease)
  • 3. Rep First Square instructions from Row 2–end, using D as accent color.

Fifth Square

  • 1. Row 1: Starting with outside right edge, with MC work 9 sc evenly spaced along top of Second Square below to corner, sc2tog over last row of square below and 1st row on adjacent side edge, work 9 sc evenly spaced to top of side. Ch 1, turn. (19 sts, 9 sc on either side of a central decrease)
  • 2. Rep First Square instructions from Row 2–end, using C as accent color.

Sixth Square

  • 1. Insert hook in outside left top ch of top left square, with A, yo, pull it through. Ch 11.
  • 2. Rep all instructions of Second Square using B as accent color.

Remainder of Squares

  • 1. Continue on in this manner, working squares on diagonal from bottom left to top right, maintaining accent colors in columns, and repeating instructions for either Fifth Square (when you are filling in a pre-existing space) or Sixth Square (when you are building up in height) until the scarf is 18 squares tall or desired length. The top edge of the scarf will look like stair steps.
  • 2. Square off end by filling in stair steps with Fifth Squares – two on diagonal, then one final square.

Edging

  • 1. With A, work 1 rnd of sc around entire piece, placing 3 sc in each corner st to ensure edging lays flat. Use tapestry needled to weave in all ends; block.
