Directions

Size

  • 1. Size is 11”x23”.

Note

  • 1. Grapefruit (A), Apricot (B), Paprika (C), Terra Cotta (D) throughout. Slip the first st of every row or every square to make picking up stitches easier. Slip knitwise on RS rows, and purlwise on WS rows.

Gauge

  • 1. Each square is approximately 3-1/2” after blocking. Gauge is not critical for this pattern.

First Square

  • 1. With A, cast on 24 with a long-tail or similar cast-on.
  • 2. Row 1 (WS) and all WS rows: P across.
  • 3. Row 2 (RS): K 11, ssk, k across. (23 sts, 11 on either side of a central decrease)
  • 4. Row 4: K 10, sk2p, k 10. (21 sts, 10 on either side of a central decrease)
  • 5. Row 6: K 9, sk2p, k 9. (19 sts, 9 on either side of a central decrease) Continue on in pattern as established, working one less knit st before and after decrease on each RS row, purling every WS row, until 3 sts remain after a WS row.
  • 6. Final Row: Sk2p. End off.

Second Square

  • 1. With B, cast on 12 sts, pick up 12 sts evenly spaced along right hand side of square just completed.
  • 2. Rep First Square instructions from Row 1-end.

Third Square

  • 1. With C, rep all instructions of Second Square.

Fourth Square

  • 1. With D, pick up 12 sts evenly spaced across top of First Square, then cast on 12 sts.
  • 2. Rep First Square instructions from Row 1-end.

Fifth Square

  • 1. With A, pick up 12 sts evenly spaced along top of Second Square, then 12 more sts evenly spaced along side of square just completed.
  • 2. Rep First Square instructions from Row 1-end.

Sixth Square

  • 1. With B, working on top of Third Square, rep instructions for Fifth Square.

Remainder of Squares

  • 1. Continue on in this manner, working squares in rows from left side (which requires a cast-on) to right side (which requires just picking up sts), maintaining color order of A, B, C, D until 6 rows of 3 squares each (18 squares total) have been completed.

Long Side Edging

  • 1. Work on each long edge of cowl. With C and RS facing, pick up 78 sts across long edge of cowl.
  • 2. Row 1: K across.
  • 3. Row 2: Bind off. Weave in all ends using tapestry needle; block.

Button Band

  • 1. With C and RS facing, pick up 39 sts across one short edge of cowl.
  • 2. K 9 rows, bind off.

Buttonhole Band

  • 1. With C and RS facing, pick up 39 sts across opposite short edge of cowl.
  • 2. Rows 1-4: K across.
  • 3. Row 5: K 4, bind off 5, (k 8, bind off 5) twice, k 4.
  • 4. Row 6: K 4, cast on 5, (k 8, cast on 5) twice, k 4.
  • 5. Rows 7-9: K across.
  • 6. Bind off. Block assembled cowl. Weave in all ends using tapestry needle. Sew buttons on button band opposite buttonholes using needle and thread.
