Basic Supplies

stylus, white graphite paper, scissors, palette, painter’s tape, rubbing alcohol, cosmetic wedge, newspaper (to cover work surface),

Directions

STEP 1

  • Condition ultralight clay and form 2”x2-1/2” base for beehive. Flatten bottom on work surface. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to bake base on parchment-lined baking sheet in oven. Let cool completely.

STEP 2

  • Condition White clay. Roll 1” ball and form into snake shape. Use roller tool to slightly flatten snake; wrap around base of beehive. Press one end of snake onto base and use super slicer tool to cut other end at 45º angle. Press ends together with fingers. Use clean water on fingertip to smooth seams and imperfections in clay. Roll small White clay ball and flatten slightly. Press ball onto top of beehive to finish shape; smooth edges.

STEP 3

  • Cut one 3” wire length. Bend length in half and twist ends together. Use style and detail tool’s metal end to indent hole on center top of beehive. Insert loop wire length. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to bake beehive in oven. Let cool.

STEP 4

  • Roll 2” White ball and divide into three small balls (for bees). Use needle end pointer tool to indent one end on each ball for heads. Cut six 1” wire lengths. Use blunt point tool to bend each piece in half forming loops. Insert loops into bees (for wings). Cut three 3” wire lengths; use pointed end of blunt point tool to curl wire lengths. Insert one end of wire into bottom of bee. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to bake in oven. Let cool.

STEP 5

  • On covered work surface, use #12 shader to apply two coats of sealer on bees and beehive. When dry, basecoat bees and beehive Spicy Mustard. On palette, use water to slightly thin puddles of Cocoa, Titanium White, and Burnt Umber. Use liner brush and Cocoa to paint fine lines horizontally on beehive coils. Use all three thinned paint colors to add small clusters of vertical lines on beehive. Load thinned Burnt Umber on bristle fan brush and lightly spatter beehive. Let dry. Paint beehive hole Cocoa. Let dry.

STEP 6

  • Use appropriate-size shader to apply varnish on beehive and bees. Let dry.

STEP 7

  • Use liner and Black to paint bee’s stripes, keeping edges of stripes sketchy and ragged. (Note: An old scruffy liner works well for this detail painting.) When dry, use liner and White to paint comma stroke on each bee head.

STEP 8

  • Use needle end pointer tool to make holes for bee’s wires. Position tip of tool between two coils; use firm grip to push tool into clay. Remove tool. Dip end of curled wire into glue; reinsert into hole. Repeat for other two bees. Gently bend wires to position bees above beehive. Let dry.

STEP 9

  • Remove lid from glass jar; wash and dry thoroughly. Use #12 shader to basecoat lid Black. Let dry. Use end of paintbrush and White to add dots in zigzag pattern. Let dry. Replace lid on jar.

STEP 10

  • Wipe jar with rubbing alcohol. Use painter’s tape to tape off 1”-wide band around center of jar. Use cosmetic wedge and (1:1) mixture of Razzle Berry + Baby Pink to basecoat band. Repeat until opaque; let dry. (Note: If air bubbles form while painting, use clean dry sponge to tap over wet paint to smooth.) Remove painter’s tape. (Note: If paint edge begins to tear, stop removing tape and use craft knife to score edge of tape from paint.) Let set several hours or heat set with blow dryer.

STEP 11

  • Print out patterns. Transfer pattern onto band. Basecoat hearts mixture of Baby Pink + touch of Razzle Berry. Use angular shader and Razzle Berry to float shading on right side of each heart. Use liner and Baby Pink to paint tiny stitches along edges of hearts and blanket stitch along top and bottom of band. Use Black to paint lettering. Let dry.

STEP 12

  • Allow gloss enamel paints to cure 21 days before use. Adhere beehive onto top of jar lid.
