Tools

  • Sewing machine and thread
  • The Warm Co. Steam-A-Seam Fusible Adhesive
  • Computer and printer
  • Chalk or disappearing ink marker

Basic Supplies

scissors, rotary cutter, ruler, mat, squaring ruler, white copy paper, iron, yardstick

Directions

Appliqué (for all three projects)

  • 1. Print out patterns. Use computer and printer to print 3” (small letters) or 3-1/2” (large letters) in font of choice on white copy paper. (Note: Designer used Arial Rounded MT Bold at size 300 (small letters) and size 360 (large letters).) Trace letters, hearts, trees, and trunks onto paper side of fusible adhesive, leaving 1/4” between images. (Note: Be sure letters are oriented so they are reversed.)
  • 2. Following manufacturer’s instructions, adhere adhesive to back of fabric. Cut out images on drawn lines.
  • 3. Remove paper backing from adhesive and position letters as directed. Iron to adhere. Use machine zigzag or buttonhole stitch to sew around each letter to secure.

Binding

  • 1. Cut 2-1/2”-wide strips of fabric. Sew strips together to make single long strip. Press seams open. Fold fabric lengthwise, with wrong sides together, and press to make 1-1/4”-wide strips to use as binding.

Lap Quilt

  • 1. Cut 40-1/2” white square and medium green 31”x37” rectangle. Fold medium green rectangle in half, creating 18-1/2”x31” piece. Using yardstick, draw line from top of fold to bottom outer edge; cut on line. Use large triangle for tree. Save smaller triangles for another project.
  • 2. Sew 1/8” from cut edges of tree to stabilize using straight stitch. Draw lines with chalk and ruler as shown. See Fig. 1. Cut rick rack 2” longer than each line; baste into place over each line, then sew using straight stitch and green thread.
  • 3. Follow appliqué instructions above to trace appliqué words (JOY, PEACE, LOVE, HOLY NIGHT) and hearts on paper side of fusible adhesive; adhere onto tree. (Note: Do not sew until tree is secured on background to prevent fabric from stretching.)
  • 4. For tree trunk, draw 4-1/2”x8-1/2” rectangle on paper side of adhesive, leaving 1/4” border of paper around lines. Adhere to back of brown fabric, then cut out on drawn line. Remove paper backing.
  • 5. Carefully press all edges of tree under 1/4”. At corners, press corner flap in first, then press sides. Position 40-1/2” white square on work surface. Center tree and trunk on white square, with trunk touching bottom of white square. Pin tree in place; iron trunk in place. Appliqué around edges of tree and trunk with machine blanket stitch or zigzag. Sew around appliqué letters and hearts.
  • 6. Cut four red fabric strips measuring 1-1/2”x width of fabric. Cut five white fabric strips measuring 1-1/2”x width of fabric. Use strips to cut following border strips: Border 1, two red 1-1/2”x40-1/2”; Border 2, two red 1-1/2”x42-1/2”; Border 3, two white 1-1/2”x42-1/2”; Border 4, two white 1-1/2”x44-1/2”. Sew borders to quilt as indicated on Border Diagram.
  • 7. Cut six medium green and six red strips each measuring 2-1/2”x width of fabric. Sew one red and one green strip together to make strip set. Press seams toward red. Cut 2-1/2” intervals to make 16 segments. Repeat with remaining medium green and red strips to make a total of 96 segments. Arrange and sew segments to make two side borders and two top/bottom borders. Press seams to one side. Sew side border to quilt. Press top and bottom borders to quilt. Press seams away from center.
  • 8. Cut four red fabric strips measuring 1-1/2”x width of fabric. Cut five white fabric strips measuring 1-1/2”x width of fabric. Use these strips to cut following border strips: Border 7, two white 1-1/2”x52-1/2”; Border 8, two white 1-1/2”x54-1/2”; Border 9, two red 1-1/2”x54-1/2”; Border 10, two red 1-1/2”x56-1/2”. Sew borders to quilt as indicated on Border Diagram.
  • 9. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (right side up). Pin or baste. Quilt as desired. Cut six medium green strips measuring 2-1/2”x width of fabric. Make binding following instructions above; sew to quilt.

Table Topper

  • 1. Cut 16-1/2” white square. Cut four 5-1/2”x16-1/2” medium green rectangles.
  • 2. Cut one medium green and one red strip each measuring 3”x width of fabric. Sew strips together to make strip set. Cut at 3” intervals to make eight segments. See Fig. 2. Arrange and sew segments to make four four-patch units.
  • 3. Arrange and sew four patch units, green rectangles, and white square to form top.
  • 4. Follow appliqué directions above to adhere words (PEACE, LOVE, JOY, HOPE), trees, and trunks onto top.
  • 5. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, and table topper (right side up). Pin or baste. Quilt as desired. Cut three red strips measuring 2-1/2”x width of fabric. Make binding following directions above; sew to table topper.

Table Runner

  • 1. Cut 8-1/2”x32-1/2” white rectangle. Cut two 4-1/2”x32-1/2” medium green rectangles.
  • 2. Cut one medium green and one red strip measuring 2-1/2”x width of fabric. Sew strips together to make strip set. Cut at 2-1/2” intervals to make 16 segments. Arrange and sew segments to make two patch units.
  • 3. Arrange and sew green rectangles, white rectangle, and patch units to form top.
  • 4. Follow appliqué directions above to adhere words (PEACE, JOY, LOVE, HOPE), hearts, trees, and trunks onto top.
  • 5. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, and table runner (right side up). Pin or baste. Quilt as desired. Cut three red strips measuring 2-1/2”x width of fabric. Make binding following directions above; sew to table runner.
