Basic Supplies

ruler, paintbrush, hand saw and cutting surface, sanding block, scissors, hammer, computer, photo-editing software and printer, cutting mat and rotary tool, iron and pressing cloth, embroidery needle, sewing machine

Directions

STEP 1

  • Use rotary tool and cutting surface to randomly cut fabric rectangles, in angles and straight edges, into pieces measuring 2”-3” wide. Sew wrong sides together and press seams open. Continue until four rectangles are sewn together. Use ruler to cut 7”x5-1/2” rectangle. Cut cotton batting to 7”x5-1/2” and sew to back of pieced rectangle. Trim edges as needed. Sew random stitching on front, alternating between straight, zig-zag, and other decorative stitches.

STEP 2

  • Use photo editing software to size photos as desired. Print photos on inkjet cotton. Cut fusible webbing same-size as photos and fuse to photo backing. Reserve scraps for tiny sentiments. Fuse to quilted rectangles. Use alphabet stamps for various adjectives and stamp on small inkjet cotton scraps. Use iron to fuse to webbing and fuse in place on quilted rectangles. Machine sew edges of photos with straight stitch.

STEP 3

  • Use die-cutting machine to cut birds and hearts from recycled sweater scraps. Thread embroidery needle with three strands dark brown or red thread. Blanket stitch or sew running stitch on sentiments and die-cut shapes.

STEP 4

  • Form rosettes by twisting end of 2 yd. fabric strips and wrapping to form tight spiral; spot glue on rolled edges. Glue jeweled embellishments on center of rosettes using Liquid Fusion. Glue rosettes randomly on quilted rectangles.

STEP 5

  • Follow manufacturer’s instructions to insert eyelets on edges of quilted rectangles. Use hammer to secure eyelets. Punch holes in eyelets using scissors point. Cut ribbon into 5” lengths and insert into holes to join rectangles together. Tie knots to secure.

STEP 6

  • Use hand saw to cut dowel into 24” length. Sand edges and surface with sanding block. Paint dowel Dark Chocolate and lightly sand for aged appearance. Insert dowel through looped ribbons on top of quilted hanging to hang.
