Directions

Half Knot Sinnet Technique

  • 1. A sinnet is a braid or chain made with a repeated pattern of knots. The necklace and bracelet are both made from a repeated pattern of one knot, which creates the twist. The pattern is created by tying two outside cords over two center cords (half a square knot). Center cords should be kept taut. Put left cord under two center cords and over right cord (Fig. 1). Then put right cord under two center cords and over left cord (Fig. 2). Approximately every seven half knots, the sinnet will make a full twist so simply turn over cords and continue.

Necklace

  • 1. For long necklace braid, cut two 40" lengths (center cords) and two 120" lengths (outer cords) from hemp twine. Knot ends together 4" from one end. Tape knotted end to flat surface. Tie half knot sinnet for 8". String oval bead on center cords, wrapping remaining cords around outside of bead. Quick Tip: For easier beading, apply masking tape around twine ends and twist into point. Tie knots for 1-1/4". String round bead on center cords. Tie knots for 1-1/4". String oval bead on center cords. Tie knots for 8". Knot ends together. (Note: Do not trim ends past knot.)
  • 2. For short necklace braid, cut two 30" lengths (center cords) and two 110" lengths (outer cords) from hemp twine. Knot ends together, 4" from end. Tape knotted end to flat surface. Tie half knot sinnet for 6". String round bead on center cords. Tie knots for 1-1/2". String oval bead on center cords. Tie knots for 1-1/2". String round bead on center cords. Tie knots for 6". Knot ends together.
  • 3. Knot short and long braid ends together. String round bead on all eight twine lengths at one necklace end. Knot twine ends above bead. Trim ends 1/4" past knot. Secure knot with glue.
  • 4. Divide remaining necklace end into two equal sections and braid. Knot braids together, 3/4" from beginning of braid to make loop closure

Bracelet

  • 1. Cut 30" length (center cords) and 80" length (outside cords) from hemp twine; fold in half. Knot twine lengths together, 3/4" from fold. Tape folded end to flat surface. Tie half knot sinnet for 1-1/2". String round bead on center cords, wrapping remaining cords around outside of bead. Tie knots for 1". String oval bead on center cords. Tie knots for 1". String round bead on center cords. Tie knots for 1-1/2". Knot twine ends together.
  • 2. String round bead on all four twine pieces. Knot ends above bead. Trim ends 1/2" past knot. Secure knot with glue. To close bracelet, wrap loop end around bead.
