Basic Supplies

pencil, computer and printer, copy paper, newspaper, dowel

Directions

STEP 1

  • Use computer to find straight-type font about 9-1/2” tall. If font doesn’t allow that size, print as large as possible and use photocopier to enlarge to 9-1/2”. (Note: Font used is “Machine”, but any basic, straight-cut font will work.) Print 9-1/2” tall letters to use as patterns. Cut out letters with 8” scissors.

STEP 2

  • On foam board, use pencil and metal ruler to draw 20”x6” base and trace letters. Use #1 knife (with new blade), metal ruler, and cutting mat to cut out base and letters.

STEP 3

  • In well-ventilated, newspaper-covered area, spray all sides and edges of pieces with several light coats of color: Purple on “B”; Orange on “O”; Yellow on “O”; Olive Bright on “!” and Black on base. Let dry.

STEP 4

  • To attach rick rack, wrap around edges of base, applying glue to rick rack, pressing in place. (Note: Bottom edge of rick rack should align with bottom edge of base, but top can extend above.)

STEP 5

  • Refer to photo for angled position of letters. Hot glue bottoms of letters to base, including bottom of exclamation point. For top of exclamation point, wrap wire around dowel to coil and remove. Scrunch to make slightly irregular. Referring to photo, insert wire end into top and bottom of exclamation point, securing with hot glue. Let dry.

Note

  • 1. For photos, full body shots work best, standing or sitting images. Use 5” scissors to cut out photos. (Note: Cut close to body first, getting rid of excess photo. Then cut right along body outline, turning photo so that scissors go into small areas.) Arrange photos on painted letters, with photo edges extending beyond letters as desired. Use repositionable tape to temporarily attach while planning and repositioning images. For dimension, use several layers of foam mounting tape to attach photos.
