Materials

  • Caron International Simply Soft, 1 skein each: Bone (9703), Chocolate (9750)

  • Crochet hooks: US H-8, US F-5 (for ears, food pads, and bootie ties)
  • Stitch markers
  • Yarn needle

Directions

Sizes

  • 1. Sizes are: 3–6 months (6–9 months, 9–12 months); finished measurements: hat; circumference: 16 (17, 18)”; bootie (foot) length: 3 (3-1/2, 4)”

Gauge

  • 1. In single crochet, 16 sts and 18 rounds = 4” with larger hook. In half double crochet, 16 sts and 16 rows = 4” with larger hook.

Special Stitches

  • 1. BPhdc: Back-post half double crochet—Yarn over, insert hook from back to front and then to back again around post of stitch, yarn over and draw up loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
  • 2. FPhdc: Front-post half double crochet—Yarn over, insert hook from front to back and then to front again around post of stitch, yarn over and draw up loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
  • 3. sc2tog: Single crochet 2 together—Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, (2 loops on hook), insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

Note

  • 1. Most of hat is worked in continuous rounds. Do not join rounds, unless otherwise instructed. Other pieces are worked in rows and rounds. Read instructions carefully, noting when to join and when not to join rounds, and when to turn and when not to turn. Booties are worked in sections, beginning with small circular heel. Sole is worked beginning across portion of heel stitches. Top of foot is shaped, back and forth in rows, over sole, beginning at toe end of sole and working back towards heel. Ankle is worked in rounds, over remaining stitches of heel and last row of top of foot. Bone (A) and Chocolate (B) throughout.

Hat

  • 1. With larger hook and A, ch 2.
  • 2. Round 1 (RS): Work 10 sc in 2nd ch from hook; do not join, work in continuous rounds—10 sc. Place stitch marker for beginning of round. Move marker up as each round is completed.
  • 3. Round 2: [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] 5 times—15 sc.
  • 4. Round 3: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts] 5 times—20 sc.
  • 5. Round 4: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts] 5 times—25 sc.
  • 6. Round 5: 2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts, [2 sc in next st, place marker in first sc of 2-sc group just made, sc in next 4 sts] 4 times—30 sc. As the following rounds are worked, move markers to first sc of each 2-sc group. If you can see the 2-sc groups, markers are not necessary, work 2 sc in the first sc of each 2-sc group as you work each of the next 7 (8, 9) rows.
  • 7. Rounds 6–12 (13, 14): 2 sc in next st, [sc in each st to next marked st, 2 sc in marked st] 4 times, sc in each remaining st to end of round—65 (70, 75) sc at the end of Round 12 (13, 14).
  • 8. Round 13 (14, 15): [Sc2tog, sc in next 11 (12, 13) sts] 5 times—60 (65, 70) sc.
  • 9. Round 14 (15, 16): [Sc2tog, sc in next 10 (11, 12) sts] 5 times—55 (60, 65) sc.
  • 10. Rounds 15 (16, 17)–18 (21, 24): Sc in each st around. Sl st in next st, to join last round. (Note: Remaining rounds of hat are worked in joined rounds.)
  • 11. Round 19 (22, 25): Ch 2 (counts as hdc here and throughout), 2 (1, 2) hdc in next st, sc in next 19 (20, 21) sts; working in front loops only, hdc in next 6 (8, 10) sts (for base of earflap); working in both loops, sc in next 22 sts; working in front loops only, hdc in next 6 (8, 10) sts (for base of 2nd earflap); join with sl st in top of beginning ch—56 (60, 66) hdc.
  • 12. Rounds 20 (23, 26)–22 (25, 28): *FPhdc around next st, BPhdc around next st; repeat from * around; join with sl st in top of first FPhdc—28 (30, 33) FPhdc and 28 (30, 33) BPhdc. Fasten off.
  • 13. Round 23 (26, 29): With RS facing, join B with sc in any st, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc—56 (60, 66) sc. Fasten off.

Ear Flaps

  • 1. Row 1: Working in unworked back loops of Round 18 (21, 24) (earflap bases), with larger hook, join A with sc in first loop of either group of sts, sc in next 5 (7, 9) back loops, turn—6 (8, 10) sc.
  • 2. Rows 2 and 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
  • 3. Row 4: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each st across to last 2 sts, sc2tog, turn—4 (6, 8) sc.
  • 4. Rows 5–7: Repeat Rows 2–4—2 (4, 6) sc.
  • 5. Rows 8 and 9: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Ear Flaps Sizes 6–9 months (9–12 months) Only

  • 1. Next 1 (2) Rows: Repeat Row 4, 1 (2) times—2 sc.

Ear Flaps All Sizes

  • 1. Row 10 (11, 12): Ch 1, sc2tog, do NOT turn—1 sc. Do not fasten off.
  • 2. Tie: Ch 50, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across; sl st in last st of Row 10 (11, 12). Fasten off.
  • 3. Repeat to make 2nd earflap.

Ears (make 2) inner ear

  • 1. With smaller hook and B, ch 4.
  • 2. Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—3 sc.
  • 3. Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), dc in first st, 3 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st, turn—7 dc.
  • 4. Row 3: Ch 2, dc in next 5 sts, hdc in last st, turn—2 hdc and 5 dc.
  • 5. Row 4: Ch 1, sk first st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, ch 1, sl st in last st, turn—2 sc, 2 hdc, and 1 dc.
  • 6. Row 5: Ch 1, sk the sl st, sk the ch-1 sp, sk the next sc, sc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, do NOT turn; leave remaining sts unworked—2 sc and 1 hdc.
  • 7. Edging Round (RS): Ch 1, pivot piece to work in ends of rows across side edge, sc in next 4 rows; working across opposite side of foundation ch, sc in next 3 ch; working in ends of rows across other side edge, sc in next row, place a marker in sc just made, sc in next 3 rows, ch 1; join with sl st in first sc of Row 5—11 sc. Fasten off.

Outer Ear

  • 1. Row 1 (RS): With RS facing and smaller hook, join A with sc in marked st of inner ear edging round, sc in next st, 2 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 3 hdc in next ch-1 sp; working in sts of Row 5 of inner ear, 3 dc in each of next 3 sts, 3 hdc in next ch-1 sp, 2 hdc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each of next 2 sts, turn—4 sc, 14 hdc, and 9 dc.
  • 2. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across—27 sc. Fasten off.
  • 3. Row 3: With RS facing, join B with sl st in first st, *ch 1, sl st in next st; repeat from * across. Fasten off.

Booties (make 2) foot pads (make 6 – 3 each bootie

  • 1. With smaller hook and B, leaving a long beginning tail for sewing, ch 2.
  • 2. Round 1: Work 10 sc in 2nd ch from hook; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing. Repeat for all 6 pads (3 for each bootie). With beginning tail, sew center opening closed. Do not weave in ending tail. Set aside.

Heel

  • 1. With larger hook and B, ch 3; join with sl st to form ring.
  • 2. Round 1 (RS): Ch 3, 15 dc in ring; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—16 dc. Fasten off.

Sole

  • 1. Row 1 (RS): With RS facing and larger hook, join A with sc in back loop of any heel st, sc in next 4 sts, turn; leave remaining sts unworked—5 sc.
  • 2. Rows 2 and 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
  • 3. Next 1 (2, 2) Rows: Ch 2, hdc in first st, hdc in each st across to last st, 2 hdc in last st, turn—7 (9, 9) hdc.
  • 4. Next 0 (1, 3) Rows: Ch 2, hdc in each st across, turn.
  • 5. Row 5 (7, 9): Ch 1, sc in first st, hdc in next 1 (2, 2) sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, hdc in next 1 (2, 2) sts, sc in last st, turn—2 sc, 2 (4, 4) hdc, and 5 dc.
  • 6. Row 6 (8, 10): Ch 1, sc in each st across, do NOT turn—9 (11, 11) sc.
  • 7. Edging Round: Ch 1, pivot piece to work in ends of rows across side edge of sole, sk Row 6 (8, 10), sc in next 5 (7, 9) rows: working in back loops only of unworked sts on heel, sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next 3 sts, sc in next 4 sts; working in ends of rows across other side edge of sole, sc in next 5 (7, 9) rows, ch 1; join with sl st in first st of Row 6 (8, 10) on sole—24 (28, 32) sc. Do not fasten off.

Top of Foot

  • 1. Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, working in back loops only of sts of Row 6 (8, 10), hdc in next 9 (11, 11) sts, sl st in next ch-1 sp (at beginning of edging round), sl st in next st of edging, turn; leave remaining sts unworked—9 (11, 11) hdc.
  • 2. Row 2: Do not ch-2 to begin this row or following rows of top of foot, sk the 2 sl sts and work into the hdc sts, hdc in next 9 (11, 11) hdc, sl st in ch-1 sp, sl st in next st of edging, turn.
  • 3. Rows 3–5 (7, 9): Hdc in next 9 (11, 11) hdc, sl st in next 2 sts of edging, turn.
  • 4. Row 6 (8, 10): Hdc in next 9 (11, 11) hdc, sl st in next 2 sts of edging; do NOT turn. Do not fasten off. Place loop on stitch marker to hold. Foot pads need to be sewn to sole before continuing with bootie.

Attach Foot Pads

  • 1. With ending tail, whipstitch foot pad to bottom of sole, sewing through back loops only. Refer to photo for placement of pads. Repeat for remaining foot pads.

Ankle

  • 1. Return loop of bootie to hook.
  • 2. Round 1: Working in back loops only of sts around heel, sc in each of the 14 remaining heel sts, sc in both loops of each of the 9 (11, 11) top of foot hdc sts: join with sl st in first sc, turn—23 (25, 25) sts.
  • 3. Round 2: Ch 1, sc in next 9 (11, 11) sts, hdc in next 14 sts; join with sl st in first sc, turn.
  • 4. Round 3: Ch 2, hdc in next 13 sts, working in front loops only, sc in next 9 (11, 11) sts; join with sl st in top of beginning ch, turn.
  • 5. Next 1 (3, 5) Rounds: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in each st around; do NOT join or turn, place marker for beginning of round and move marker up as work progresses.
  • 6. Round 5 (7, 9): Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc—24 (26, 26) sc. Remove beginning of round marker.
  • 7. Round 6 (8, 10) (lacing round): Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 1, sk next st, *sc in next st, ch 1, sk next st; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first sc—12 (13, 13) sc and 12 (13, 13) ch-1 sps.
  • 8. Round 7 (9, 11): Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next ch-1 sp, *sc in next st, sc in next ch-1 sp; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first sc—24 (26, 26) sc. Fasten off.
  • 9. Round 8 (10, 12): With smaller hook, join B with sl st in any st, ch 1, (sl st in next st, ch 1) around. Fasten off.

Tie

  • 1. With smaller hook and A, ch 80. Fasten off. Weave tie through ch-1 sps of Round 6 (8, 10) (lacing round) and tie in bow.

Finishing

  • 1. Using yarn needle, weave in all ends.
