Baby's Crocheted Unicorn

Materials

  • Caron International Simply Soft: 3 oz. Off White (9702), 1-1/2 oz. Orchid (9717), 1 oz. Soft Blue (9712)
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Safety eyes (or buttons), two

  • Crochet hook, US G-6
  • Stitch marker
  • Latch hook (optional)
  • Yarn needle

Directions

Size

  • 1. Size is 13" tall, including horn.

Gauge

  • 1. Gauge is not critical for this project. However, work tightly so that stuffing will not show through stitches.

Special Stitches

  • 1. sc2tog: Single crochet 2 together—[Insert hook in next stitch and draw up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

Note

  • 1. Pieces are worked in continuous rounds with RS facing throughout; do not join and do not turn at end of rounds. Place stitch marker to indicate beginning of round, and move marker up as work progresses. Safety eyes, buttons, or embroidery can be used for unicorn’s eyes. Off White (A), Orchid (B), and Soft Blue (C) throughout.

Head

  • 1. With A, ch 2.
  • 2. Round 1 (RS): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; do not join and do not turn—6 sc.
  • 3. Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around—12 sc.
  • 4. Round 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times—18 sc.
  • 5. Round 4: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc] 6 times—24 sc.
  • 6. Round 5: [Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times—30 sc.
  • 7. Rounds 6–15: Sc in each sc around. Begin to stuff head. Continue to stuff as work progresses.
  • 8. Round 16: Sc in next 2 sc, [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc] 5 times, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc—36 sc.
  • 9. Round 17: [Sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times—42 sc.
  • 10. Rounds 18–26: Sc in each sc around. Insert safety eyes between Rounds 15 and 16. (Note: If you prefer to use buttons or embroider eyes, wait until unicorn is assembled before sewing eyes in place.)
  • 11. Round 27: [Sc in next 5 sc, sc2tog] 6 times—36 sc.
  • 12. Round 28: Sc in next 2 sc, [sc2tog, sc in next 4 sc] 5 times, sc2tog, sc in next 2 sc—30 sc.
  • 13. Round 29: [Sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog] 6 times—24 sc.
  • 14. Round 30: [Sc2tog, sc in next 2 sc] 6 times—18 sc.
  • 15. Round 31: [Sc in next sc, sc2tog] 6 times—12 sc.
  • 16. Round 32: [Sc2tog] 6 times—6 sc.
  • 17. Round 33: [Sk next 2 sc, sl st in next sc] twice. Work sl st in next st. Fasten off.

Body

  • 1. With A, ch 2.
  • 2. Rounds 1–5 (RS): Work Rounds 1–5 of Head—30 sc.
  • 3. Round 6: Sc in next 2 sc, [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc] 5 times, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc—36 sc.
  • 4. Round 7: [Sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times—42 sc.
  • 5. Rounds 8–30: Sc in each sc around. Begin to stuff body. Continue to stuff piece as work progresses.
  • 6. Rounds 31–37: Work Rounds 27–33 of Head. Work sl st in next st. Fasten off.

Neck

  • 1. With A, leaving long beginning tail for sewing, ch 27; being careful not to twist ch; join with sl st in first ch to form ring.
  • 2. Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around—27 sc.
  • 3. Rounds 2–10: Sc in each sc around. Work sl st in next st. Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.

Front Legs (make 2)

  • 1. With B, ch 2.
  • 2. Rounds 1–4: Work Rounds 1–4 of Head—24 sc.
  • 3. Round 5: Working in back loops only, sc in each sc around.
  • 4. Round 6: Sc in each sc around.
  • 5. Round 7: Sc in next 6 sc, [sc2tog] 6 times, sc in next 6 sc—18 sc. Sl st in next st. Fasten off.
  • 6. Round 8: Join A with sc in same st as last sl st worked, sc in each sc around. Begin to stuff leg. Continue to stuff piece as work progresses.
  • 7. Rounds 9–26: Sc in each sc around. Sl st in next st. Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.

Rear Legs (make 2)

  • 1. With B, ch 2.
  • 2. Rounds 1–24: Work Rounds 1–24 of Front Leg. Sl st in next st. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Ears (make 2)

  • 1. (Note: Do not stuff ears.) With A, ch 2.
  • 2. Round 1 (RS): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; do not join and do not turn—6 sc.
  • 3. Round 2: Sc in each sc around.
  • 4. Round 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 3 times—9 sc.
  • 5. Round 4: [Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 3 times—12 sc.
  • 6. Round 5: [Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 3 times—15 sc.
  • 7. Rounds 6–8: Sc in each sc around.
  • 8. Round 9: [Sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog] 3 times—12 sc.
  • 9. Round 10: [Sc2tog] 6 times—6 sc. Sl st in next st. Fasten off.

Horn

  • 1. With B, ch 2.
  • 2. Round 1 (RS): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; do not join and do not turn—6 sc.
  • 3. Round 2: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 3 times—9 sc.
  • 4. Rounds 3–5: Sc in each sc around.
  • 5. Round 6: [Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 3 times—12 sc.
  • 6. Rounds 7–9: Sc in each sc around.
  • 7. Round 10: [Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 3 times—15 sc.

Mane Base

  • 1. With C, ch 3.
  • 2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, turn—2 sc.
  • 3. Row 2: Ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in each sc across, turn.
  • 4. Row 3: Ch 1, working in front loops only, sc in each sc across, turn.
  • 5. Rows 4–21: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 nine times. Sl st in next st. Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.

Tail Base

  • 1. With B, ch 2.
  • 2. Round 1 (RS): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; do not join and do not turn—6 sc.
  • 3. Round 2: Working in back loops only, [sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 3 times—9 sc. Sl st in next st. Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.

Finishing

  • 1. Note: Use crochet hook or latch hook (optional) to attach strands for mane and tail.
  • 2. Mane: Cut 10” lengths of C. Holding two strands together, fold in half. Attach strands on mane base, as follows: Insert hook from RS to WS and back to RS around any free loop of mane base. Insert hook into folded strand, draw fold through stitch to form loop; draw ends of folded yarn through loop and draw tight. Trim mane.
  • 3. Tail: Cut 15” lengths of B. Holding three strands together, fold in half. Attach strands on tail base, as follows: insert hook from RS to WS and back to RS around any free loop of tail base. Insert hook into folded strands, draw fold through stitch to form loop, draw ends of folded yarn through loop and draw tight. Trim tail. Sew neck to body; stuff firmly. Sew head to neck. Flatten ears in half lengthwise; sew to sides of head. (Note: If using buttons or embroidery for eyes, sew eyes to head between Rounds 15 and 16.) Beginning on base of neck, sew mane to neck beginning at base of neck and continuing to top of head. Stuff and sew horn to top of head where mane ends. Sew tail on top back of body. Stuff legs firmly; sew to underside of body. With B, embroider nose on face (optional). Using yarn needle, weave in all ends.
