  • 1. All seams are 1/4” and are stitched with right sides facing, unless otherwise indicated. Separate floss and use two strands for embroidery.

14”x14” Framed Pillow

  • 1. Print out pattern. For pillow front, cut four canvas triangle, four floral triangles, four striped rectangles at 3-1/2”x8-1/2” and four 3-1/2” floral squares. For pillow back, cut one 14-1/2” wide x 13” tall floral and one at 14-1/2” wide x 3” tall floral. For piping, cut 1-3/4 yards of 1-1/2”-wide bias striped fabric. For bird, cut body (cut to face toward the right) and wing (wrong side of fabric will be used from Denim.
  • 2. For pillow front, use photo as layout guide and assemble pinwheel square as shown. Pin and stitch one striped rectangle to top edge. Repeat, adding a rectangle to lower edge. Pin and stitch a floral square to each end of remaining rectangles, creating two longer borders. Pin and stitch one longer border to right side of pinwheel section. Repeat for remaining side to complete piecing for pillow top. With wing facing up (wrong side will show), tuck under seam allowance, pin and appliqué in place to body. Use floss and satin stitch to create beak. Stitch beads in place for eyes. Pin bird in place on pillow front, tuck under seam allowance and appliqué in place.
  • 3. With right sides facing, center 15” square batting over a 15” square of muslin. Center pillow top over batting and baste all layers together.
  • 4. Use quilting thread and a running stitch to quilt along seam lines of canvas triangles. Stitch along edges of pillow to secure all layers. Remove basting threads and trim excess batting and muslin away.
  • 5. Create piping by stitching bias strip over cord. With raw edges aligned, baste around edge of pillow, clipping corners and overlapping ends of piping when they meet.
  • 6. Press under 3/4” along long top edge of 14-1/2”x3” backing piece. Place folded edge along one side of 14” zipper (near the teeth) and stitch in place. Press under 3/4” along lower edge of 14-1/2”x13” backing. Place folded edge just over the zipper teeth and stitch in place to create a lapped zipper.
  • 7. Stitch pillow front to back. Clip and trim seam. Turn right side out.
  • 8. Insert pillow form.

16”x16” Triangle Pillow

  • 1. Print out pattern. For pillow front, twelve canvas triangles, twelve floral triangles and eight striped triangles. (Note: Refer to photo for direction of stripes.) For pillow back, cut one 16-1/2” wide x 15” tall floral and one 16-1/2” wide x 3” tall floral. For piping, cut two yards of 1-1/2”-wide bias striped fabric. For bird, cut body (cut to face toward the left) and one wing (wrong side of fabric will be used) of Denim.
  • 2. For pillow front, refer to photo for suggested layout, noting that the top is made up of four squares, each with eight triangles and that each is a variation of a pinwheel. Assemble each pinwheel square as diagrammed. Pin and stitch two pinwheel squares together to create a rectangle. Repeat for remaining two pinwheel squares. Pin and stitch rectangles together to complete pinwheel design for pillow top. Complete bird as in Step 2 of 14”x14” Framed Pillow and appliqué in place.
  • 3. With right sides facing, center 17” square batting over a 17” square of muslin. Center the pillow top over the batting and baste all the layers together.
  • 4. Use quilting thread and a running stitch to quilt along seam lines of canvas triangles. Stitch along edges of pillow to secure all layers. Remove basting threads and trim excess batting and muslin away.
  • 5. Complete pillow following Steps 5-8 for the 14”x14” Framed Pillow, using 16” zipper and backing fabrics cut above.
