  • Country yarn (75% Microdenier Acrylic/25% Merino Wool; 3 oz./85g, 185 yds/169m skein), 3 oz.: Loden Forest (A), Deep Taupe (B) (NaturallyCaron.com)

Tools

  • Double-ended Tunisian crochet hook, size U.S. K-10.5 (6.5mm), or size to obtain gauge
  • Yarn needle

Directions

Gauge

  • 1. In pattern using Tunisian crochet hook, 17 sts and 16 rows = 4”/10cm.

Special Stitches

  • 1. Tunisian Crochet: Each row of Tunisian crochet is worked in two steps, A forward pass and a return pass. Different Tunisian stitches (Tss and Tps) are created while working the forward pass. The return pass is worked in the same manner for both Tss and Tps.

Forward Pass:

  • 1. Tunisian Simple Stitch (Tss)—Working from right to left, hold working yarn behind work, insert hook in next vertical bar, yarn over and draw up a loop. Note: This stitch is worked, when indicated, during the Forward Pass.
  • 2. Tunisian Purl Stitch (Tps)—Working from right to left, hold working yarn in front of work, insert hook in next vertical bar, yarn over and draw up a loop. Note: This stitch is worked, when indicated, during the Forward Pass.

Return Pass (Both Tss and Tps):

  • 1. Working from left to right, yarn over and draw through first loop on hook, *yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; repeat from * across.

Notes

  • 1. Always rotate the work so that the other side is facing you prior to working a return pass (“Rotate to Return”).
  • 2. When beginning a forward pass, always skip the first vertical bar that is directly below the hook. At the end of a forward pass, insert hook behind both strands of opposite color on the end of the piece and draw up a loop.

Helpful Tip

  • 1. At the end of each forward pass, count the number of loops on the hook to ensure consistency.

Scarf

  • 1. With B, ch 32.
  • 2. Base Row (Forward Pass): Skip first ch, working in back bumps, *insert hook in next ch, yarn over and draw up a loop, leave loop on hook (2 loops on hook); repeat from * across, drawing up a loop in each ch—32 loops on hook. Drop, but do not fasten off B. Rotate piece to work with opposite end of hook.

Color A Rows

  • 1. Return Pass: With A, yarn over and draw through first loop on hook, *yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; repeat from * across.
  • 2. Forward Pass: With A, skip first vertical bar in previous row, *hold yarn in front of work, insert hook in next vertical bar, yarn over and draw up a loop (tps made), hold yarn in back of work, insert hook in next vertical bar, yarn over and draw up a loop (tss made); repeat from * across to last st, hold yarn in back of work, insert hook under both strands of B on the end of the piece and draw up a loop (tss made). Drop, but do not fasten off, A. Rotate piece to work with opposite end of hook.

Color B Rows

  • 1. Return Pass: With B, yarn over and draw through first loop on hook, *yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; repeat from * across.
  • 2. Forward Pass: With B, skip first vertical bar in previous row, *hold yarn in back of work, insert hook in next vertical bar, yarn over and draw up a loop (tss made), hold yarn in front of work, insert hook in next vertical bar, yarn over and draw up a loop (tps made); repeat from * across to last st, hold yarn in back of work, insert hook under both strands of B on the end of the piece and draw up a loop (tss made). Drop, but do not fasten off, B. Rotate piece to work with opposite end of hook.
  • 3. Continue in pattern, alternating Color A and Color B rows, until piece measures about 54”/137cm from beginning (or until desired length); end with a Return Pass.
  • 4. Last Row (Forward Pass): Skip first vertical bar in previous row, hold yarn in back of work, *insert hook in next vertical bar, yarn over and draw through vertical bar and loop on hook (sl st made); repeat from * across.
  • 5. Fasten off.

Finishing

  • 1. Weave in ends.
