Mitered Baby Cardigan

Materials

  • Caron International Simply Soft Yarn: Sunshine (MC) 6 (6, 6, 8) oz.; Mango (CC) 3 (6, 6, 6) oz. or colors of choice
  • Buttons, 1”, two

Tools

  • Knitting needles: US size 9 (5.5mm) or size to obtain gauge; US Size 7 (4.5mm) needles
  • Stitch markers
  • Yarn needle
  • Optional: Row counter

Stitch Type

  • Stockinette stitch (St st): : > Knit on right side, purl on wrong side

Directions

Gauge

  • 1. 14 sts and 7 rows = 5” (12.5cm). Gauge is not critical for this project.

Notes

  • 1. Color not in use is left hanging along edge and picked up from below when needed unless otherwise indicated.

Back

  • 1. With larger needles and MC, using a long tail cast on method, cast on 48 (52, 56, 60) sts. Purl next row.

Beg Garter st ridge pattern

  • 1. Row 1 (RS): With MC, knit.
  • 2. Row 2: Purl.
  • 3. Row 3: With CC, knit.
  • 4. Row 4: Knit.
  • 5. Rep these 4 rows, changing colors every 2 rows until you have completed 10 (11, 12, 13) reps, ending with row 4. Place markers at each end of last row for sleeve pickup. Cut CC yarn.

Beg mitered portion of back

  • 1. With MC yarn, cast on 25 (27, 29, 31) sts for mitered portion of yoke, using the e-wrap method.
  • 2. Next row (RS): K73 (79, 83, 91) sts, cast on 25 (27, 29, 31) sts at end of this row for mitered portion of yoke, using the e-wrap method. – 98 (106, 114, 122) sts.
  • 3. Next row: Purl. Attach CC yarn.
  • 4. Row 1 (RS): With CC, k23 (25, 27, 29) sts, k3tog, k46 (50, 54, 58) sts, k3tog, k to end.
  • 5. Row 2: Knit.
  • 6. Row 3: With MC, k22 (24, 26, 28) sts, k3tog, k44 (48, 52, 56) sts, k3tog, k to end.
  • 7. Row 4: Purl.
  • 8. Row 5: With CC, k21 (23, 25, 27) sts, k3tog, k42 (46, 50, 54) sts, k3tog, k to end.
  • 9. Row 6: Knit.
  • 10. Rep rows 3-6 for pattern except on each RS row you will knit 1 less before the first k3tog and 2 less before the second k3tog.
  • 11. Continue to work in pattern until 10 sts remain, ending with row 3.
  • 12. Next row (WS): P1, p3tog, p2, p3tog, p1. With MC, bind off remaining 6 sts.

Left Front

  • 1. With the MC, cast on 24 (26, 28, 30) sts, using the long tail cast on method.
  • 2. Purl next row.
  • 3. Work Garter st ridge pattern as for back for 10 (11, 12, 13) reps, ending with row 4. Mark each end of last row for sleeve pickup. ***Cut CC yarn.

Beg mitered portion of front

  • 1. With MC, cast on 25 (27, 29, 31) sts for mitered portion of yoke, using the e-wrap method – 49 (53, 57, 61) sts.
  • 2. Next row (RS): Knit.
  • 3. Next row: Purl.
  • 4. Row 1 (RS): With CC, k23 (25, 27, 29) sts, k3tog, k to end.
  • 5. Row 2: Knit.
  • 6. Row 3: With MC, k22 (24, 26, 28) sts, k3tog, k to end.
  • 7. Row 4: Purl.
  • 8. Row 5: With CC, k21 (23, 25, 27) sts, k3tog, k to end.
  • 9. Row 6: Knit.
  • 10. Rep rows 3-6, knitting one less st before k3tog on each RS row until 23 (27, 27, 31) sts remain, ending with row 6. Cut both yarns and slip remaining sts on a holder.

Right Front

  • 1. Complete as for left front to ***. Do not cut CC.
  • 2. Next row: With MC, knit across row, then cast on 25 (27, 29, 31) sts for mitered portion of yoke, using the e-wrap method.
  • 3. Purl next row.
  • 4. Follow Row 1-6 as for left front and then rep rows 3-6 until 23 (27, 27, 31) sts remain, ending with row 6. Cut both yarns and slip remaining sts on a holder.
  • 5. Sew shoulder seams matching the CC ridges.

Sleeves

  • 1. (Note: The sleeves are picked up at the armholes and knitted down to the cuff.)
  • 2. With CC, pick up 48 (52, 56, 60) sts between markers placed before beg of mitered part of the front and back.
  • 3. Knit next row.
  • 4. Attach MC and beg Garter St ridge pattern as for back and fronts for 8 (10, 10, 14) rows. On next RS row, dec 1 st each end as follows: K 1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. *Continue in Garter st ridge pattern for 11 (11, 11, 13) more rows and rep decrease row. Rep from * for a total of 4 decrease rows – 40 (44, 48, 52) sts remain. Continue in pattern rows until the sleeve measures 7 (8, 9, 10)” from pick up row, ending with row 4. Cut CC yarn. Using MC, work in St st for 4 more rows and bind off all sts.

Neck

  • 1. With MC and RS facing, k10 (12, 12, 14) sts, k3tog, k10 (12, 12, 14) sts from right front holder, pick up 21 (23, 25, 27) sts across back, k10 (12, 12, 14) sts, k3tog, k10 (12, 12, 14) sts from left front holder – 63 (73, 75, 85) sts.
  • 2. Size 18 mos and 3 yrs only:
  • 3. Purl across.
  • 4. Sizes 24 mos and 4 yrs:
  • 5. P11 (13) sts, p3tog, p45 (53) sts, p3tog, p to end.

All sizes

  • 1. Row 1: K63 (69, 75, 81) sts.
  • 2. Row 2: Purl.
  • 3. Bind off all sts.

Button Band (left for girl, right for boy)

  • 1. Using smaller needle and RS facing, pick up 49 (52, 55, 61) sts (approx 3 sts every 4 rows) along front edge. Beg and end picked up sts with CC ridge (do not include the rolled edges). Knit 4 rows, ending with a RS row. On WS, bind off as if to knit. Mark for buttons, placing the top button 1/2” below neck and the second button 2” below that.

Buttonhole Band (right for girl, left for boy)

  • 1. Using smaller needle and RS facing, pick up 49 (52, 55, 61) sts (approx 3 sts every 4 rows) along front edge. Beg and end picked up sts with CC ridge (do not include the rolled edges). Knit one row. Work buttonholes opposite button markers on button band as follows:
  • 2. Buttonholes (RS): K to one st before marker, bind off 3 sts, k to one st before next marker, bind off 3 sts, k to end.
  • 3. On following row, k across casting on 3 sts over bound off sts of previous row.
  • 4. K one more row. On WS, bind off as if to knit.

Finishing

  • 1. Sew side and sleeve seams matching the CC ridges. Weave in ends. Attach buttons. Block to measurements.
