Artist's Tips

  • 1. Use angular shader for floating; pre-moisten area with wash brush, corner load angular shader, then with loaded side towards darkest area, float color. Soften water's edges with mop brush. Use lunar blenders to dry brush highlights. Use bristle fan on apple and a few leaves using thinned paint. Use flat shader to base smaller areas. Use liners and thinned paint to add detailing. Use "Layering" technique to "stack colors".

Preparation

  • 1. Use Neutral Grey to base sides, top outer rim, and tray center, omitting outer edges of tray center and bottom. Let dry. Add a touch of rubbing alcohol to wipes. Working one section at a time, use wash brush and mix of Charcoal Grey and water (2:1) to quickly overcoat base color; while wet, crunch up wipe and dab off paint for mottled look. Use Antique Maroon to basecoat outer edge of tray center and entire bottom.
  • 2. Print out pattern; transfer basic pattern lines. (Transfer details as needed.)

Cantaloupe

  • 1. Use brush mix of Gingerbread, Tangelo Orange, and a touch of Marigold to base, allowing color differences to show. Use Antique Maroon to shade center along outer edge, behind pear and grapes; use corner of angle brush to dab some darkness in center to portray where seeds were spooned out. Float washes of Tangelo Orange here and there. Use mix of Marigold + Lt. Buttermilk (1:1) to dry brush highlight; repeat with Lt. Buttermilk. (Note: As other fruits are worked, you will dry brush various colors onto cantaloupe.) Use #1 liner and Antique Green to paint outside rind; while wet, pull some Black Green along bottom of rind behind fruits, then pull some Lt. Buttermilk highlights here and there throughout rind.

Nectarines

  • 1. In same manner as cantaloupe, base using same brush mix. Shade Antique Maroon along bottom and highlight Marigold along top; float Primary Red wash over bottom. Use mix of Marigold + Lt. Buttermilk (1:1) to dry brush highlight; repeat with Lt. Buttermilk.

Granny Smith Apple

  • 1. Base Hauser Med. Green. Corner load bristle fan with Foliage Green, then pull some graining along outer edges of apple following apple curve; repeat with Avocado Dip in other areas and end with Lt. Buttermilk. Shade stem gully Traditional Burnt Umber.
  • 2. Shade Avocado along sides and bottom, then shade Plantation Pine. Dry brush some Williamsburg Blue on right side and lightly on top left of apple. (Note: Some blue will be added when grapes are painted.) For stem, double-load #1 liner with Traditional Burnt Umber and Dove Grey. Use Lamp Black to lightly outline stem and to add detail touches.

Pears

  • 1. Base with brush mix of Marigold and Antique Gold Deep. Use Milk Chocolate to heavily shade along left side and lightly along right side; repeat with Traditional Burnt Umber. Use Traditional Burnt Umber to paint divot on bottom of pears; pull some fine small dried stamen lines, then repeat with Lamp Black. Use brush mix of Marigold and Lt. Buttermilk to dry brush highlights; repeat with Lt. Buttermilk. Spatter pears with Traditional Burnt Umber. (Note: Repeat any or all prior steps to obtain definition you want; particularly floating color washes.) Dry brush Uniform Blue along left side. Float a wash of Marigold here and there over pears, repeat with Primary Red.

Pomegranate

  • 1. Base Antique Maroon. Use Black Plum to shade outside of stemmed area and along crevices; repeat with Lamp Black. Use brush mix of Antique Maroon and Dove Grey to dry brush highlights; repeat with Dove Grey. Float a wash or washes of Alizarin Crimson over entire fruit; soften with mop brush. Use 10/0 liner and Lamp Black to outline flowered stem area.

Plum

  • 1. Use brush mix of Plum, Alizarin Crimson and a touch of Uniform Blue to base. Use Payne's Grey to shade along bottom behind other fruit and in crevice; repeat with Lamp Black. Use brush mix of Plum and Lt. Buttermilk to dry brush highlights; repeat with Lt. Buttermilk. Float a wash of Alizarin Crimson over entire plum; repeat dry brush highlight and shading if needed.

Grapes

  • 1. First apply a wash of color in area of grapes. Then create grapes by shading one side of each grape working about two-thirds around, then highlight opposite edge to form a full circle or grape shape (Note: Work each grape, shading and highlighting, then when adding grapes on top some will automatically be "behind".)
  • 2. Red Grapes: Base with wash mix of Alizarin Crimson and touch of Black Plum. Use #6 flat to shade Alizarin Crimson along bottom. (Note: Work shading on same side for each grape.) Use brush mix of Alizarin Crimson and Dove Grey to highlight. Use brush mix of Alizarin Crimson and Lt. Buttermilk to dry brush highlight; repeat with Lt. Buttermilk. Float a wash of Alizarin Crimson over a few grapes. Dry brush some purples from purple grapes here and there onto red grapes. Repeat highlight as needed. Very lightly outline some grapes that you want to be in front using color closest to area.
  • 3. Purple Grapes: Base with wash mix of Dioxazine Purple and Grape Juice. In same manner as red grapes, shade with brush mix of Dioxazine Purple and Payne's Grey; highlight with brush mix of Grape Juice and Alizarin Crimson. Use brush mix of Williamsburg Blue and Dove Grey to dry brush highlights; repeat with Lt. Buttermilk. Float a wash of Alizarin Crimson over a few grapes. For bluer grapes, float wash with brush mix of Payne's Grey and Williamsburg Blue.

Leaves

  • 1. Base grape leaves Plantation Pine and two other leaves Avocado. Use Black Green to shade along bottom, up center, and here and there on outside edges. Wash Foliage Green on one and Marigold on another. Pull Dried Basil Green veins. Dry brush leaves Dried Basil Green, Reindeer Moss Green, and a bit of Lt. Buttermilk. Dry brush some Blue Mist here and there on two remaining leaves.

Blueberries

  • 1. Base some Williamsburg Blue and other Uniform Blue. Use Payne's Grey to shade about one-third or two-thirds of each berry. Float wash of Alizarin Crimson. Use Payne's Grey to paint stem gully; if needed, lightly outline berry. Pull stems with Payne's Grey, Lamp Black, and a couple with Winter Blue. Dry brush berries Winter Blue; repeat with Lt. Buttermilk.

Bleeding Hearts

  • 1. Base outer petals with brush mix of Alizarin Crimson and Lt. Buttermilk and center petal Dove Grey. Use Alizarin Crimson to lightly outline pink petals. Use brush mix of Alizarin Crimson and Lt. Buttermilk to pull small comma strokes along each side of pink petals; immediately pull Alizarin Crimson over a few. Float a shade of Violet Haze at base of grey petal. Use Alizarin Crimson to add two small strokes at end of each grey petal. Dry brush pink petals Poodlekskirt Pink; repeat with Lt. Buttermilk. Pull stems with brush mix of Milk Chocolate and Traditional Burnt Umber; add touches of Dove Grey highlights.

Bleeding Heart Leaves

  • 1. Base with brush mix of Avocado and Blue Mist. Shade Plantation Pine and Black Green. Dry brush Alizarin Crimson here and there. Use Blue Mist to very lightly outline leaves and to pull veins. (Note: Leaves were intended not to stand out, so little detail is added.)

Finishing

  • 1. Use Lamp Black to shade behind outer edges of fruit; use mop brush to soften. Highlight Neutral Grey along outer edges of tray center; mop to soften. Pull wispy vines here and there along outer rim and in fruit design using various greens on palette. Use Traditional Burnt Umber to pull grape vine curls; highlight with touches of Dove Grey.
  • 2. Apply several varnish coats.
