Bewitching Halloween Pins

Materials

  • DecoArt Americana Acrylics: Burnt Orange, Festive Green, Flesh Tone, Grape Juice, Hauser Dark Green, Hi-Lite Flesh, Lamp (Ebony) Black, Olive Green, Purple Cow, Shading Flesh, Warm White

Tools

  • Black permanent micron pen, .01

Directions

Preparation

  • 1. Use emery board to smooth one side of wood slices. Apply sealer over smoothed front side and bark edges. Sand front side again until fairly smooth. Use Purple Cow to base front sides leaving a 1/8" border around edges. Use angular brush to shade Grape Juice along outer edges of based area.
  • 2. Print out patterns; transfer basic pattern lines onto surfaces omitting hair, eyes, and stocking stripes. (Transfer details as needed.)

Painting Instructions

  • 1. Use Lamp Black to base witch's hat, shoes, and caldron; highlight each with touch of Warm White. Use brush mix of Lamp Black and Warm White to loosely line front top edge of caldron and handle, and to loosely line front top edge of boots.
  • 2. Use Festive Green to base witch's hatband, spider, and green goop inside cauldron; shade each Hauser Dk. Green and use Olive Green to highlight hatband and spider. Use #2 shader and Hauser Dk. Green to shade bubbles inside caldron and use Festive Green to shade bubbles floating above caldron; highlight all bubbles Warm White and wash a touch of Olive Green over highlighted areas.
  • 3. Base stockings Burnt Orange. Use liner and thinned Lamp Black to paint stripes. Use #1 and a touch of Warm White to dry brush highlights down center of each leg.
  • 4. Base witch's face Flesh Tone; shade Shading Flesh and highlight Hi-Lite Flesh on nose and chin. Use liner and Warm White to paint eyes on witch and spider; dot pupils Lamp Black.
  • 5. Use micron pen to add witch's hair and to outline face; add spider web, spider's legs, shoe laces, and lettering. (Note: Allow ink to dry at least 30 minutes before erasing graphite lines.)

Finishing

  • 1. Apply several varnish coats to painted surfaces and bark. (Note: Do not varnish backs.) Glue pin-backs to backside of wood slices.
