Basic Supplies

newspaper (to cover work surface)

Directions

Artist's Tips

  • 1. All dry brushing is done using deerfoot. Use shaders or flat wash to float colors; soften floats with mop brush, gently pouncing over water's edge. Use script liners to do all line work; thin paint to inky consistency and blot tip on paper towel to "sharpen" point. To rake, fully load tooth (rake) brush with thinned paint.
  • 2. Flick tips of bristles on hard surface such as palette edge to remove immediate paint build up and to open bristles. For ease in painting, turn surface to stroke towards yourself; rest wrist on table, hold brush straight up at base of area, and flick brush towards yourself pivoting tip of handle away from you, and allowing bristles to taper off naturally.

Preparation

  • 1. Use dry wedge/cosmetic sponge or petifour and Lt. Mocha to base top and sides of lid. (Note: To remove bubbles, softly blow over them.) Let dry. Use fine grit sandpaper to sand smooth. Repeat for opaque coverage.
  • 2. Print out pattern; transfer basic pattern lines. (Transfer details as needed.) Base hat Heritage Brick and jacket Celery Green. Use Olive Pearl and wedge to stencil Strokework Background Stencil on jacket, omitting sleeves. Randomly stencil Snow White snowflakes on jacket, omitting sleeves.

Snowlady

  • 1. Base nose Heritage Brick. Use Soft Black to base eyes and mouth. Use Raw Umber to shade all "skin" areas; apply narrow floats around eyes and nose, and wide floats around body parts. Darken corners and crevices with second float. Dry brush cheeks Heritage Brick; add Snow White highlight lines along top. Float French Grey Blue along base of eye; use brush mix of French Grey Blue and Snow White to shade top corners. Add a "damp and tickle" Snow White highlight in lower right corners of eyes; add comma stroke highlight along left side. Use Lamp Black to paint eyebrows, eyelashes, and cheek lines.
  • 2. Shade Soft Black along base of nose; dry brush Lt. Mocha highlights. Add Snow White comma stroke highlight line.

Jacket

  • 1. Refer to Painting Chart.
  • 2. Base poinsettia petals French Mauve. Float Antique Mauve to divide petals; shade base and tips of petals. Deepen base of petals with second float and then again with Heritage Brick. Add back-to-back horizontal Lt. Mocha highlight across center of petals. For flower center, use deerfoot to stipple Midnite Green. Use round brush to add various size Camel dots; add tiny Heritage Brick dots.
  • 3. Use Midnite Green to shade behind sleeves and fur on jacket; deepen corners and crevices with second coat.
  • 4. For sleeves, mix a marble size amount of stencil gel and pea size amount of powdered pigment; use palette knife to carefully spread mix over Strokework Background Stencil. Immediately remove stencil and wash. Allow stenciling to dry. Lightly sand to smooth. Use Midnite Green to float sleeve creases, shoulders, and elbows. Line sleeve edges with French Mauve and Antique Mauve.

Bracelet

  • 1. Stroke Midnite Green teardrop shapes; over-stroke with Olive Pearl. Add tiny Snow White highlight dots.

Fur

  • 1. Use Slate Grey to rake fur for solid coverage in center and airy on outer edges; highlight Snow White and shade sparingly with brush mix of Slate Grey and Lamp Black. Overstroke Snow White.

Finishing

  • 1. Use oval wash to apply two to three varnish coats. Use varnish to dot over eye highlight shine and bracelet; while wet, sprinkle with Glamour Dust. Shake off excess.
