  • Decorative ribbon, 3/4"-wide

Basic Supplies

scissors, ruler, pencil, transfer paper, soft cloth

Directions

Prepare Surface

  • 1. Use flat wash to basecoat large surface areas. Use shaders to basecoat shapes according to pattern size, and angle brushes for shading. Use filbert for rounded shapes. Use script liner for all line work, lettering, and fine detailing, and use liner for larger details. Use stylus to dip-dot. Wipe plate clean and use sealer to seal with several light coats.
  • 2. Basecoat lacey rim Warm White. Basecoat center of girl plate Pink Chiffon and center of boy plate Blue Chiffon.
  • 3. Print out patterns. Transfer patterns onto saucers.

Boy Plate

  • 1. For bear head and hands, basecoat head Toffee; shade Warm Neutral along bottom and up right side. Highlight Light Mocha on tips of ears and along top and left side of face. Float Spice Pink inside ears. Use Soft Black to paint nose and dot eyes. Use thinned Soft Black to paint mouth and eyebrows. Use cotton swab and pink chalk to blush cheeks. Use Warm White to highlight dot eyes and nose and to tri-dot cheek. Basecoat hands Toffee, shade Warm White, and highlight Light Mocha.
  • 2. For pajamas, basecoat Winter Blue. Use thinned Winter Blue to paint pinstripes. Use Baby Blue to shade down front, along bottoms, and right sides. Use Warm White to highlight down front, left sides, and along tops. Add thin Warm White band along neckline. Dot Warm White buttons. Basecoat feet Warm White and dot Cool White "grippies" on bottoms; shade Winter Blue down centers, along bottom, and up right sides of feet.
  • 3. For blanket, basecoat squares Butter, Winter Blue, and Mint Julep. Add Warm White line work detailing on blue and green squares. Shade squares along bottom and right sides as follows: blue squares Baby Blue, green squares Arbor Green, and yellow squares French Vanilla. Highlight Warm White along tops and left sides.
  • 4. For balloons, basecoat green balloon Mint Julep Green; shade Arbor Green along right side and highlight Warm White along left side. Basecoat yellow balloon Butter, floating over green balloon; shade French Vanilla and highlight Warm White. Basecoat blue balloon Winter Blue, floating over yellow balloon; shade Baby Blue and highlight Warm White. Dry brush Warm White highlight down left side of balloons and pull Cool White comma stroke highlight. Use thinned Soft Black to paint strings.
  • 5. For baby pins, paint metal area Grey Sky and highlight Warm White along left side. Basecoat tops Winter Blue and shade Baby Blue along bottoms and right sides; highlight Warm White along tops and left sides. Pull Cool White highlight stroke.
  • 6. For baby bottle, basecoat bottle area Warm White; shade Grey Sky along right side and bottom circle, and highlight left side Winter Blue. Paint lid Winter Blue and use thinned Baby Blue to paint lines; shade Baby Blue along bottom and right side, and highlight Warm White along top and left side. Paint nipple area Butter; shade French Vanilla along right side and basecoat, and highlight left side Warm White. Add Cool White highlight stroke down nipple, lid, and bottle.
  • 7. For stars, basecoat Butter; shade French Vanilla along right sides and bottoms of lines, and highlight Warm White along tops and left sides.
  • 8. For rattle, basecoat ball and handle Warm White. Basecoat large stripe on ball Winter Blue; line edges Mint Julep Green. Add Baby Blue dots on bottom of rattle and Warm White dots on blue stripe. Shade Mint Julep Green on right side of ball and handle; highlight left side of ball Winter Blue. Basecoat bow Winter Blue; shade Baby Blue and highlight Warm White.
  • 9. For blocks, basecoat Warm White. For "B's", shade Winter Blue around outer edges; shade Baby Blue along inner edges and dot corners. Paint letters Baby Blue. For "A", use Mint Julep Green to shade outer edges and to paint letter. Shade inner edges Arbor Green; dot corners. For "Y", use Butter to shade outer edges. Use French Vanilla to shade inner edges, paint letter, and dot corners.

Girl Plate

  • 1. For bear head and hands, paint in same manner as Boy Plate. Basecoat hair bow Poodleskirt Pink; shade Spice Pink and highlight Warm White.
  • 2. For pajamas, basecoat Poodleskirt Pink; shade Spice Pink down front, along bottoms, and right sides, and highlight Warm White down front, left sides, and tops. Float Warm White ruffle around neck. Dot Warm White buttons. Basecoat feet Warm White and dot Cool White "grippies" on bottoms; shade Poodleskirt Pink down centers, along bottom and up right sides of feet.
  • 3. For blanket, basecoat squares Lilac, Pink Chiffon, and Mint Julep Green. Add Warm White line work detailing on green and lilac squares. Shade squares along bottom and rights side as follows: pink squares Spice Pink, green squares Arbor Green, and lilac squares Wild Orchid. Highlight Warm White along tops and left sides.
  • 4. For balloons, paint balloons in same way as Boy Plate: basecoat lavender balloon Lilac, shade Wild Orchid, and highlight Warm White; basecoat pink balloon Poodleskirt Pink, shade Spice Pink, and highlight Warm White; basecoat green balloon Mint Julep Green, shade Arbor Green, and highlight Warm White.
  • 5. For baby pins, paint in same way as Boy Plate: basecoat tops Poodleskirt Pink, shade Spice Pink and highlight Warm White.
  • 6. For baby bottle, paint in same way as Boy Plate. Highlight left side of bottle Poodleskirt Pink. Basecoat lid Poodleskirt Pink and use thinned Spice Pink to paint lines; use Spice Pink to shade and Warm White to highlight. Paint nipple Lilac; shade Wild Orchid and highlight Warm White.
  • 7. For hearts, basecoat Poodleskirt Pink; use thinned Warm White to paint crosshatching. Shade Spice Pink along right sides and highlight Warm White along tops and left sides. Dot Warm White around edges.
  • 8. For rattle, paint in same manner as Boy Plate. Basecoat large stripe on ball Poodleskirt Pink; line edges Mint Julep Green. Add Poodleskirt Pink dots on bottom of rattle and Warm White dots on pink stripe. Shade ball and handle Mint Julep Green and highlight ball Poodleskirt Pink. Basecoat bow Poodleskirt Pink, shade Spice Pink, and highlight Warm White.
  • 9. For blocks, basecoat Warm White. For "B's", shade Poodleskirt Pink around outer edges; shade Pink Spice along inner edges and dot corners. Paint letters Poodleskirt Pink. For "A", use Mint Julep Green to shade outer edges and to paint letter. Shade inner edges Arbor Green; dot corners. For "Y", use Lilac to shade outer edges. Use Wild Orchid to shade inner edges, paint letter, and dot corners.

Finishing

  • 1. Apply several coats of sealer on plates. Tie alternating 2"-long ribbons around plate edges.

Tip

  • 1. Add baby’s name, date and time of birth, and birth size to plate edges by adjusting design if desired.
