Pattern - Robin's Nest and Pussy Willow Garden Accents

  • Preparation
  • 1. Sand chair to remove old varnish and unwanted marks. Fill imperfections with wood filler; let dry and sand. Revive wood color of chair with wash of Raw Sienna over areas that will not be basecoated. Dry brush design areas Blue Mist allowing some wood to "peak" through, especially along edges.
  • 2. Sponge inside bowl Blue Mist. Double-load clean sponge with Milk Chocolate and Raw Sienna to sponge outside of bowl.
  • 3. Print out patterns. Using photo as guide, transfer basic details onto chair. Use charcoal pencil to draw vines on bowl using pattern as guide.

  • 1. Float sheer Blue Haze under nest; mop to soften. Spatter thinned Blue Haze around nest and under branches.

  • 2. Shade eggs Blue Haze. (Note: Base coat of chair is color of eggs.) Mop to soften. Highlight Ice Blue. Load deerfoot stippler with Snow White; off-load most of paint and dry brush reflected highlight on each egg. Lightly spatter thinned Blue Haze to speckle eggs.
  • 3. Wash nest area with thinned Burnt Umber. Shade Soft Black to form inside of nest and wash Burnt Sienna on front of nest. Thin puddles of Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Antique Gold, and Golden Straw; use liner to paint straw from dark to light. Add fine twigs sticking out here and there in Burnt Umber.
  • Pussy Willow Branches
  • 1. Use round brush and brush mix of Burnt Umber and Raw Sienna to stroke in main branches; highlight Sable Brown. Use liner and equal mix of thinned Burnt Umber + Raw Sienna to add fine twigs.

  • Leaves
  • 1. Double-load round brush with Midnite Green and Arbor Green; blend on palette. Form large leaves with two strokes and smaller leaves with one stroke. Use liner and equal mix of thinned Midnite Green + Arbor Green to add stems and squiggles.
  • Pussy Willows
  • 1. Double-load deerfoot stippler with Bittersweet Chocolate on heel and Dove Grey on toe; tap on palette to blend slightly then stipple blossoms. Let dry. Load toe of dirty brush with small amount Snow White; use light touch to highlight tops of blossoms making them appear fuzzy. Use liner to add Bittersweet Chocolate stems.
  • Finishing
  • 1. Apply two coats varnish to all surfaces. For added protection, follow manufacturer's directions to apply Painter's Wax.
