Pattern - Fruite Compote Utensil Tote
- 1. Print out pattern; transfer basic details omitting branches and small berries at this time.
- 2. Use #8 petal brush to base the following: apple and pear Bright Yellow; plum Lavender; leaves Avocado.
- Artist's Tips
- 1. Enamel paints are a little transparent. After basecoat has been painted, the second layer will adhere much better. A realistic look will be achieved by layering the techniques and colors. The first layer is to give fruit footing. Allow to dry thoroughly. Pull paint following direction of fruit's curves. Brush strokes may be visible, but should be minimal due to natural hair of brush. Use a light touch. Corner load brush to float first shadows, next step is a highlight, and last step is a wet-on-wet technique using base color and shadow color together. The accent colors are tints and reinforcement of highlights. Add back light into shadows to highlight. Tints are watered down paints that are reflective colors from surrounding objects.
- 1. Use #8 petal brush to wash True Red; add enough water to let some basecoat color show through. Use 5/8" angular shader to shade Tuscan Red around entire apple. Use Napa Red to add a second shadow in darkest areas; float shadow where stem is. Use #8 petal brush and brush mix of Bright Yellow and White to pat in highlight. Use rake brush and mix of Citron Green + a little water to add touches of color here and there. Use #2 petal brush to base stem Dk. Chocolate; while wet, highlight White. Float Country Blue back light along left edge allowing thin edge of apple showing.
- 1. Use 5/8" angular shader to shade Burnt Sienna. Use #8 petal brush and brush mix of Bright Yellow + a little White to pat in two highlights. Use wet-on-wet technique to add second shadow of Bright Yellow and Burnt Sienna; gently pat color around edge and at neck of pear. Use 1/2" angular shader to float Burnt Sienna shadow where stem is. Use #2 petal brush to base stem Dk. Chocolate; while wet, highlight White. Use thinned Tuscan Red to tint here and there. Float some Citron Green on left edges. Add second White highlights in highlight areas. Float Country Blue back light along right edge allowing thin edge of pear showing.
- 1. Use 5/8" angular shader to shade Dioxazine Purple. Use #8 petal brush and mix of Lavender + a little White to pat in highlight area. Use wet-on-wet technique to add second shadow of Lavender and Dioxazine Purple. Use thinned Napa Red to tint here and there. In same manner as other fruits, paint stem.
- 1. Work one leaf at a time. Dampen leaf with Avocado. Use Hauser Dk. Green to pull a shadow where center vein will be and along bottom edge and top of leaf. Quickly add Citron Green to highlight areas. Repeat these steps, blending colors as you go. Use striper brush to paint Citron Green vein lines. Use 1/2" angular shader and thinned Napa Red to tint tips. Use #8 petal brush to dry brush Country Blue in darkest areas.
- Branches and Berries
- 1. Use #4 petal brush to pull branches with Dk. Chocolate; highlight White. Use striper to add smaller Dk. Chocolate twigs. Double-load #4 petal brush with Avocado and Citron Green; blend out color and paint several onestroke leaves. For berries, dip berry maker into paint then tap on palette before tapping surface; use Napa Red for some berries and Dioxazine Purple for others. Do not rinse between colors. Use 1/2" angular shader to shade some berries Citron Green. Tint Razzle Berry here and there. Use striper brush and White to add highlight dots on each berry. Use same brush and Hauser Dk. Green to add some stems and vein lines on leaves; paint tendrils Avocado.
- 1. (Note: Use cotton swab and rubbing alcohol to wipe away mistakes.) Apply Clear Medium over painted areas. All paint to cure several days before washing. Hand washing is recommended.
