Basic Supplies

  • scissors, ruler, pencil, masking tape, stylus, paper towels, container of water, tracing paper, graphite paper, newspaper (to cover work surface), copy paper, iron and pressing surface

Pattern - Door Banner Series: Garden

  • Note
  • 1. Unless specific brush is noted in instructions, use best brush available to fit area painting. When floating colors for shading or highlighting, use mop brush to soften floats.
  • Banner
  • 1. Measure and cut 12-1/2"x21-1/2" fabric rectangle. Position rectangle with wrong side facing up on work surface. Fold back fabric on top and bottom edges 1/2" to center; press. Fold top edge again 1-1/2"; press. (Note: This top edge will form casing for dowel to run through.) Use sewing machine and white thread to stitch along folded top and bottom edges.
  • 2. Print out patterns. Trace patterns onto tracing paper.
  • 3. Basecoat both sides of fabric rectangle with two coats of Bleached Sand. Let dry.
  • 4. Measure 9" from top and mark. Measure another 1" down and mark. Measure 3-1/2" down again and mark, leaving 4" area at bottom. On top 9" section, measure from left side over and mark at 9", making 9" square at top with 3-1/2"x9" rectangle next to square.
  • 5. On 1" section, measure down 1/2" and draw light pencil line for checks. Paint Lamp Black checks using #6 shader. Let dry.
  • 6. Basecoat 9" square Blue Mist and bottom 4" section Avocado Dip. Let dry. Lightly sponge Plantation Pine on Avocado Dip section for soft mottled effect. Let dry.
  • 7. Use graphite paper to trace main pattern elements onto backgrounds.
  • 8. Basecoat fence Bleached Sand, hat Moon Yellow, hat band Melon, watering can Avocado Dip, shovel handle Raw Sienna, and shovel Graphite. Let dry. Basecoat toppling flower pots Gingerbread. Let dry.
  • 9. Shade fence Khaki Tan, highlighting where boards overlap with Burnt Umber. Add detail lines with Burnt Umber; use end of stylus to dot nails Lamp Black. Let dry.
  • 10. Shade hat Raw Sienna and highlight Bleached Sand. Dot hat band Bleached Sand and shade Antique Rose.
  • 11. Shade watering can on both sides and along bottom with sideload of Plantation Pine. Drybrush highlight down center of can Lemonade using crescent.
  • 12. Shade shovel handle along right side Burnt Umber. Shade shovel on either side of "v" Lamp Black. Drybrush shovel Blue Mist to highlight.
  • 13. Shade ground areas with sideload of Burnt Umber. Add squiggly Plantation Pine lines to suggest weeds in dirt.
  • 14. Shade toppling flower pots on both sides and under rims Burnt Sienna. Tap greenery into pots Plantation Pine using deerfoot stippler; highlight Avocado Dip. Let dry. Tap in flowers Melon and Moon Yellow. Shade grassy area under pots Avocado Dip; shade again Plantation Pine. Add blades of grass around bottom pot Plantation Pine and Avocado Dip using liner.
  • 15. Stencil "WELCOME" using alphabet stencil Blue Mist. Let dry. Remove stencil. Line letters Lamp Black using 10/0 script liner. Add thin Lamp Black lines to left side and bottom of each letter. Line bottom of section Lamp Black.
  • 16. Paint "to the Garden" lettering Lamp Black using 1/8" stroke brush. Thin paint to ink consistency to work lettering. Let dry.
  • 17. Add squiggly double lines to separate sections using thinned Lamp Black and 10/0 script liner. Let dry. Outline design elements Lamp Black. Let dry.
  • 18. Paint wooden dowel Avocado Dip and dowel caps Melon. Let dry. Use end of paintbrush to dot dowel caps and 10/0 script liner to line dowel caps Bleached Sand. Let dry.
  • 19. Apply varnish on dowel, dowel caps, and banner. Let dry. Insert dowel into pocket and attach dowel caps to either end. Attach jute twine onto ends of dowel to hang.
  • Tip
  • 1. Instead of using a stroke brush in Step 16, transfer wording onto banner and use round brush to fill in letters.
