Materials

  • Diamond Tech Mosaic Garden Stakes Kit
  • Hirschberg Modern Romance Clay Floral Picks
  • Burlap flowers
  • Wire
  • Assorted embellishments: buttons, charms, pearls, coins, found objects

Tools

  • Wire cutters
  • Round-nose pliers
  • Paint: multi-surface white, gold outdoor
  • Acrylic sealer
  • Beacon Adhesives Dazzle-Tac Jewelry Glue

Basic Supplies

  • Scissors Paper towels measuring spoons, petroleum jelly or cooking spray, scrap paper (larger than mold), pencil, baking sheet and oven, metal fork, paintbrush
  • 1. Position mold on scrap paper, with open side facing up. Trace around mold to create design template. Apply thin coat of petroleum jelly or cooking spray inside mold using paper towel. Set aside.

  • 2. Choose word for stake; position letters on design template. Position largest collage element on template and surround with additional embellishments. Overlap and stack elements for best arrangement.
  • 3. Remove all non-white elements from design template. Following manufacturer's instructions, spray paint elements white. Apply three coats to entire surface of collage elements; let dry thoroughly. Apply acrylic sealer to burlap flowers; let dry thoroughly. Reposition collage elements back into design template.

  • 4. Cut 1/4" wire length; bend into "u" shape using pliers. Attach wire to heavier elements such as larger charms (to be used as anchor in cement).

  • 5. Add water to cement mixing bag; mix following manufacturer's instructions until cement is smooth and pourable, like cake batter. Diagonally cut corner off mixing bag and slowly squeeze cement into mold. Shake and tap mold to settle cement and remove air bubbles. Dispose of empty mixing bag in trash.

  • 6. Remove collage elements from design template and place into cement, positioning largest pieces first. Lightly push elements into cement, keeping area free for stamped word.

  • 7. Allow cement to set for 30 minutes before stamping "HOPE" or "BLOOM". (Note: If first stamped letter fills with water, cement isn't ready. Tap mold to resettle cement and try again in 10 minutes.) Once stamped, allow cement to dry for one hour.

  • 8. Turn mold over on flat surface. Lift up on sides to release mosaic. Let cure for 24 hours.
  • 9. Wipe oily residue from back of mosaic using paper towels. Cut adhesive sheet into two 1"x3" strips. Mark center top of mosaic on back using pencil. Position mosaic on baking sheet, face down, with pencil mark visible.

  • 10. Position metal fork, with prong side up, underneath lowest side of mosaic to prop for baking. Position one adhesive strip vertically in center of mosaic below pencil mark. Remove plate from garden stake and press over adhesive strip to adhere.

  • 11. Bake in oven following manufacturer's instructions; let cool completely. Insert metal prongs, with prong side down, into top of plate.

  • 12. Add additional metal or gold embellishments if desired; adhere in place. Paint stamped message gold; let dry. Apply sealer. Let dry.
