Directions

  • Preparation
  • 1. For ease in painting, remove clock face. Sand entire surface; wipe dust. Apply multi-purpose sealer; let dry. Sand again and wipe dust. Base with mix of Med. White + Warm White + Lt. Pearl + True Gold (1:1:1:1). (Note: Lt. Pearl and True Gold give background a rich pearl essence appearance.) Sand again if necessary. Base again if needed.
  • 2. Print out pattern; transfer basic pattern lines onto front of clock. (Transfer details as needed.)
  • Artist’s Tips
  • 1. Apply Extender Medium to dry surface using a large clean brush dedicated solely to Extender. Apply small amount to an area and brush back and forth to activate Extender. Extender can also be used in brush instead of water. Water is solvent to extender causing Extender to dry faster. Always apply Extender to majority of surface as Extender dries from outside in allowing for more open time to blend values. Use hair dryer between paint applications to harden paint avoiding application from lifting when Extender or Glazing Mediums are applied again. Use appropriate size flat brush to shade and highlight unless otherwise indicated.
  • Mixes
  • 1. Yellow Mix = Yellow Oxide + Med. White (1:1)
  • 2. Green Mix = Ultramarine Blue + Hansa Yellow (1:1)
  • 3. Red Mix = Yellow Mix + Naphthol Red Lt. (1:1)
  • Step 1 (Fig. 1)
  • 1. Use Yellow Mix to undercoat strawberries, flowers, and leaves. (see photos)
  • Step 2 (Fig. 2)
  • 1. Use Red Mix to shade along outer edges of strawberries leaving some yellow undercoat showing in center area to indicate light value. (see photos)
  • 2. Dress #6 filbert into mix of Green Mix + Yellow Mix (1:1); shade along base of leaf blending down center area of leaf. Soften transition lines with mini-mop. (Note: Yellow undercoat is light value area.) Use same mix to shade flower petals where they connect to center area and to separate petals. Force dry. Repeat steps if needed.
  • Step 3 (Fig. 3)
  • 1. Shade strawberries with mix of Red Mix + Burgundy on dark side (lower edge or outer edges depending on position). Use #6 filbert and brush mix of Yellow Mix and Warm White to highlight strawberries. (see photos)
  • 2. Use liner and thinned Green Mix to add leaf veins and use brush mix of Green Mix and Yellow Mix to paint stems.
  • Step 4 (Fig. 4 and 5)
  • 1. Strawberries: Continue to build shading using transparent mix of Burgundy + Naphthol Red Lt. Reinforce light value if needed with mix of Warm White + Yellow Mix. Use thinned Green Mix to add seeds; lighten some here and there with Yellow Mix. (see photos)
  • 2. Flowers: Lighten outer edges with mix of Warm White + tch. of Yellow Mix to separate; further shade Green Mix if more dark area is needed. Add touches of transparent Burgundy here and there in dark area to carry color. (see photos)
  • 3. Leaves: Use mix of Green Mix + Ultramarine Blue to apply darker value within smaller area of shading.
  • 4. Clean up surface background where needed. Force dry. Apply thin coat of Glaze over entire surface. Dry well. Use 1” flat to apply sheer application of True Gold over entire painting; this will add interest to background and relate gold to clock face and gold edges of surface. Dry well. Use mix of True Gold + tch. of Raw Umber to spatter clock front.
  • Step 5 (Fig. 6 and Fig. 7)
  • 1. Strawberries: Moisten berries with scant amount of Extender then use dry mini-mop to apply scant amount of Warm White + tch. of Yellow Mix; tap lightly around seeds in light area. Soften if needed with cleaned off mop. Use mix of Green Mix + Yellow Mix to base strawberry caps (leaves); shade and lighten using darker values of green. (see photos)
  • 2. Leaves: Moisten with Extender; use mix of Yellow Mix + Warm White to add lighter value along edges to lift and separate from another area. Apply Burgundy accents here and there on leaf edges. (see photos)
  • 3. Flowers: For flower centers, use mini-mop to tap in Green Mix. Let dry. Use #1 liner to tap in Yellow Oxide in light area then tap in smaller area of Warm White. Tap in dark value in same manner using darker green. Continue to lighten edges if needed using Warm White.
  • Finishing
  • 1. Use #1 liner and Green Mix to add line work; lighten with touches of True Gold in thicker areas.
  • 2. Use mix of True Gold + Lt. Pearl (2:1) to paint outer edges of surface; spatter with mix of True Gold + Raw Umber. Dry well. Apply Glaze onto entire surface. Dry well. Apply two varnish coats. Dry well. Replace clock face.
