Gourmet Picnic Basket

sizes: basket, 10”x22”

  • Old picnic basket
  • Off-white burlap
  • Wool felt: red; burgundy; pink; lt. green; olive green
  • Red/white gingham wired ribbon, 1-1/2”
  • Off-white buttons, 5/8”, two
  • Black perle cotton, #8

  • Decorative-edge scissors
  • Embroidery needle
  • Crafter’s Pick The Ultimate! Glue (API)
  • Sewing machine and matching thread

  • 1. Cut burlap shape(s) to cover basket as desired. Machine sew zigzag stitch around burlap edges.
  • 2. For leaves, cut four 2” circles from olive green felt, six 2” circles from lt. green felt. Cut leaf circles in half. For flowers, cut four 1-1/2” circles from pink felt, two 1-1/2” circles from burgundy felt, and two 2-1/2” circles from red felt. (Note: Use decorative-edge scissors to cut red 2-1/2” circles.) For stems, cut 1/4”-wide strips from green felt: four from olive green and two from lt. green.
  • 3. Arrange felt pieces on burlap rectangles, using photo as placement guide. (Note: Olive green half circles overlap pink circles with bottom edges touching and top edges spread apart so it resembles a flower bud opening up.) Designs are identical on burlap rectangles and make a nice pattern when top edges face each other. Glue or pin felt pieces to burlap.
  • 4. Use one strand of perle cotton to blanket stitch around outside edges of felt pieces. (Note: Embroidery loops around red flower should go between scallop or pinked edges and should go over stems.) Use perle cotton to sew buttons to burgundy circles.
  • 5. Glue burlap shapes to basket. Quick Tip: If entire basket is woven, sew buttons to corners of burlap shapes to attach them to basket.
  • 6. Attach ribbon to holes or openings in basket and tie into bows.
  • Note
  • 1. Dab glue lightly under wool felt pieces to secure them to burlap temporarily, in place of pins, if desired. Instructions are provided for covering the top of a sliding picnic basket. Measurement of each piece is approximately 8-1/2”x9”. Adjust pattern as desired. Cut circle and strips shapes the same sizes, adding additional flowers and leaves as needed to embellish burlap rectangle covering basket.
