Vintage Millinery Napkin Rings


Materials

  • Beveled wooden napkin rings, 1-1/4”, four
  • Premo! Oven-Bake Polymer Clay (Polyform Products): Zinc Yellow Hue; Sea Green
  • Patera Antique Gold Raised Tag Grande Oval Single Loop (Nunn Design), four
  • CRYSTALLIZED Swarovski Elements Flat Back Crystals, 8mm, four; Caribbean Blue Opal, 6mm, eight; Crystal, 6mm, eight
  • Assorted olive and turquoise brads, 2mm to 4mm
  • Antique Gold findings (Beadalon): Jump rings, 6mm, four; Flat Headpins, 1” long, four
  • Americana Acrylic Paints (DecoArt): Raw Umber; Light Buttermilk

Tools

  • Floral and leaf plastic molds (for polymer clay)
  • Acrylic Roller (Polyform Products), 8”
  • Duraclear Varnish (DecoArt)
  • Multi-purpose Sealer (DecoArt)
  • Paintbrush
  • Wire Nippers (Beadalon)
  • Pliers (Beadalon): Chain-nose; Round-nose
  • Wax candle
  • Parchment-lined baking sheet
  • Oven
  • Cornstarch
  • Sandpaper
  • Jewelry tweezers
  • Toothpick
  • Aleene’s adhesives (iLoveToCreate): Original Tacky Glue; Liquid Fusion

Directions

  • 1. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to condition clay. Pinch off dime-sized piece of Zinc Yellow and press into rose mold. Remove and repeat for a total of four roses. Use Sea Green clay and leaf mold to make four leaves in same way. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to bake shapes. Remove from oven and let cool.
  • 2. Use toothpick to apply Raw Umber to rose edges. Lightly dry brush rose shapes and leaves with Light Buttermilk. Apply varnish.
  • 3. Use jewelry tweezers and Liquid Fusion to adhere small beads to edges of raised tag findings. Apply small lines of glue to edge, pick up beads one at a time with tweezers and press into glue. Let dry thoroughly.
  • 4. Thread Caribbean Blue bead on head pin. Thread one crystal, Caribbean Blue bead and crystal bead. Use wire cutters to cut off tip of head pin. Use round-nose pliers to create loop at end of head pin. Use chain-nose pliers to open jump ring. Use to attach beaded head pin to loop on raised tag finding. Glue rose to center of finding, leaving top open to tuck small leaf behind rose with glue applied to back of leaf. Glue flat back crystal to center of rose.
  • 5. Sand and apply sealer to napkin rings. Paint outside of rings Raw Umber. Let dry and rub surface lightly with wax candle. Paint inside and outside of rings Light Buttermilk. When dry, sand surface to reveal distressed finish. Glue raised tag findings to wooden rings. Let dry by placing rings on sides until glue sets.
