"It Felt Like Fall" Pillow & Banner

Materials

  • WoolFelt (National Nonwovens): White; Champagne; Babbling Brook; Copper Kettle; Chestnut
  • Ornamental keyhole architectural molding pieces
  • Ribbon: beige grosgrain, 1/2”-wide, 12” length; gold satin, 1/4”-wide, 1 yd.
  • Fabric paints: copper; chocolate
  • Steam-A-Seam2 fusible web (The Warm Co.)
  • Pillow form, 14”x18”

Basic Supplies

  • Paintbrush
  • Heavy cardboard, 1”x9”
  • Rotary cutter, ruler and mat
  • Sewing machine and matching threads
  • Iron and pressing board
  • Straight pins

Directions

  • 1. Cut front and back layers of felt for pillows and back layer of felt banner, following cutting chart. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to apply fusible web to felt, then cut remaining pieces as directed on chart. (see photos)
  • Pillow
  • 1. Sew pillow front right side up on pressing board. Remove paper backing and center Layer 1 on top of pillow front; press. Sew two rows of stitching, 1/4” apart, using copper thread on machine.
  • 2. Remove paper backing and center Layer 2 on top of Layer 1; press. Sew two rows of stitching, 1/4” apart, through all layers of felt.
  • 3. Remove paper backing and center layer 3 on top of layer 2; press. Sew two rows of stitching, 1/4” apart, through all layers of felt.
  • 4. Remove paper backing from Layer 4 pieces and refer to photo to center over Layer 3; press. Sew two rows of stitching, 1/4” apart, through all layers of felt.
  • 5. Remove paper backing and center Layer 5 pieces on top of Layer 4 pieces; press. Sew two rows of stitching, 1/8” apart, through all layers of felt.
  • 6. Refer photo to stitch from point to point between two rows of stitching on final two layers, giving door panel pieces perception of depth.
  • 7. Die cut or use provided pattern to cut 10 oak leaves from assorted fused felt colors.
  • 8. Place nine leaves on top door panel as shown. When pleased with arrangement, remove paper backing from leaves and press to pillow front. Tie two-loop grosgrain bow and sew to pillow. Fuse remaining leaf at bottom of lower door panel.
  • 9. Cut oval from fusible-backed Copper Kettle felt, using pattern provided and scalloped-edge scissors. Remove backing and press oval to side of door. Glue molded keyhole to center of felt oval accent.
  • 10. Free-hand paint or use computer to print address as desired. Transfer house numbers to pillow. Paint over traced lines filling in door numbers. Let dry. Add a stroke of brown paint to inside edge of each number. Paint a stitched line down center of lower oak leaf. Let dry.
  • 11. Place sewn pillow front right side up on flat surface, centering back panel on top with right sides together; pin. Sew around outer edge, using 1/2 seam, leaving open along one edge. Turn right side out through opening. Insert pillow form and sew opening closed.
  • Banner
  • 1. Cut 2”x10” strip from fusible web. Press to top edge of Chestnut banner backing. Remove paper backing and fold felt over, centering 1”x9” cardboard strip next to top fold; press.
  • 2. Remove paper backing and center first layer of Copper Kettle felt to banner backing. Press. Sew two rows of stitching, 1/8” apart, through both layers of felt.
  • 3. Remove paper backing and center second layer of Champagne felt to banner front, using photo as placement guide. Press. Sew around outside edge stitching through all layers of felt.
  • 4. Remove paper backing and center Layer 3 (White) on top of Champagne layer; press. Sew around outside edge stitching through all layers of felt.
  • 5. Remove paper backing and center Layer 4 (Babbling Brook) on top of White layer; press. Sew around outside edge stitching through all layers of felt.
  • 6. Remove paper backing and place Layer 5 pieces (Babbling Brook) on top of last layer; press. Sew two rows of stitching, 1/4” apart, though all layers of felt. Stitch from point to point between two rows of stitching to add perception of depth to panels, using photo as guide.
  • 7. Die cut or use provided pattern to cut 15 oak leaves from assorted fused felt colors.
  • 8. Remove backing and place five leaves across bottom of banner, overlapping left corner of door; press. Stitch down center of each of leaves. Repeat adding a second and third layer of leaves and stitching until all leaves are attached to banner.
  • 9. Free-hand paint or use computer to “Welcome Fall Colors” and house numbers onto banner. Transfer lettering and house numbers to banner. Paint over traced lines. Let dry. Add a stroke of brown paint to inside edge of each number.
  • 10. Glue keyhole to left side of door. For hanger, thread satin ribbon onto large-eyed needle and tie overhand knot at one end. Stitch into back of banner along top edge and pull ribbon through until knot is against back of banner. Repeat by stitching into opposite side, sliding ribbon off needle and tying a second overhand knot.
