Decorative Jam Jar Cover

A small piece of linen or any fabric you choose, a few strands of thread, and a needle—these are the only supplies you need to start embroidering! Stitch this sweet design, courtesy of Harper Crafts, to decorate jars of homemade preserves.


  • Printed fabric
  • Unbleached linen
  • Braid trim or lace
  • Ribbon
  • DMC Embroidery Threads


Chain = (C)
Detached Chain = (DC)
Fly Stitch = (Fl)
Running Stitch = (R)
Satin = (Sa)
Stem = (St)


  • Mechanical pencil and eraser
  • Embroidery hoop
  • Embroidery needles
  • Embroidery scissors


  • Size
  • 1. Size of stitched area: 1-5/8” diameter; size of finished design: 3” diameter
  • Jam Jar Cover
  • 1. Cut out a circle 3-1/2 inches (9 cm) in diameter from the linen and embroider the berry basket or desired design. See Photo 1 and "Decorative Jam Jar Cover Design Chart". (Note: See “Secrets of Embroidery” for additional information and stitch diagrams.) Fold edges under 1/4 inch (0.5 cm) all around. (see photos)
  • 2. Cut out a circle 6 inches (15 cm) in diameter from the printed fabric. Center the embroidered fabric on top and sew together. Then sew the braid or lace around the edge of the circle.
  • 3. Cover jar and tie with ribbon.
