Faux Country Flower Tiles
- Jo Sonja Gouache: Brilliant Green, Napthol Crimson, Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Red Violet, Ultramarine Blue, Vermilion, Warm White, Yellow Light, Yellow Deep
- Brushes: Royal & Langnickel: Royal Fusion: Filbert, Series R3170, #2, #4, #6, #8; Liner, Series 3595, #2; Golden Taklon: Glaze Wash, Series R700, 1”; Royal Sable: Scumbler, Series 520
- Red transfer paper
- Jo Sonja: Texture Paste; Clear Glaze Medium; Magic Mix; Flow Medium
- Matte varnish
- Square canvas, 6” square
- 1. Use Texture Paste and palette knife to texturize canvas. Allow to dry 24 hours.
- 2. Print out patterns; lightly transfer basic details onto canvas. Use liner and thinned Raw Sienna to loosely “draw” over graphite lines and lettering. Let dry and erase transfer lines.

- Flowers and Leaves
- 1. Use filbert to wash in appropriate hues using gentle strokes; if colors appear “pastel-like” add touch more Warm White to wash.
- Cyclamen and Cherry Blossom
- 1. Use equal mix of Napthol Crimson + Warm White, then Warm White. Rose: Warm White + Napthol Crimson, then Warm White.
- Golden Wattle
- 1. Yellow Light, then Yellow Deep and then Warm White.
- Maple Leaf
- 1. Yellow Deep, then Vermilion, then with mix of Napthol Crimson + tch. of Brilliant Green starting in center and working out to edges.
- Cherry Blossom Leaves
- 1. Vermilion, then with equal mix of Brilliant Green + Warm White.
- Clover and All Green Leaves
- 1. Brilliant Green, then with mix of Brilliant Green + tch. of Napthol Crimson.
- Painting Instructions
- 1. Shade with combinations of “Local Color” (the actual color you see represented on the item you are painting) plus Raw Umber in appropriate areas, such as under edges of petals, inside center “throat” of flowers, at base of leaves, in creases of leaf veins.
- 2. Highlight flowers with a few more touches of full strength Warm White.
- 3. Glaze leaves where needed with very thin additions of Yellow Deep in light areas and Ultramarine Blue in shade areas.
- 1. Use liner and equal mix of Raw Sienna + Raw Umber to overstroke a few lines of each drawing and lettering.
- Background Shadows
- 1. Use thin Raw Sienna to float under and to right of flowers and leaves as “shadows”.
- 1. Force dry or allow paint to dry 24 hours. Sand surface to “age”, revealing top peaks of textured background.
- 2. Load glaze wash brush with slightly thinned Warm White, wipe slightly on paper towel; lay brush low and drag color across surface choosing areas of background that are already lighter in value. Use this “dry brush” technique to drag over top of flowers in a few areas, but not covering entire flower.
- 3. Use equal mix of Raw Sienna + Raw Umber to spatter entire surface. Let dry. Repeat with Warm White. Apply varnish.
