Vintage Lace Place Setting


sizes: placemat, 11”x17”; napkin, 14-1/2” square; napkin ring, 4-1/2”

Materials

  • Linen fabric, 12”x13”
  • Backing fabric, 11-1/2”x17-1/2”
  • Felt, 12”x13”
  • Coordinating fabric, 2-1/2”x11-1/2”, two
  • Fabric squares (napkin), 14-1/2”, two
  • Linen fabric (napkin ring), 4-1/2”x8-1/2”
  • Button (napkin ring)
  • White lace scraps, assorted widths and lengths

Basic Supplies

scissors, pins, ruler, pencil

Tools

  • Sewing machine and thread
  • C&T Publishing fast2fuse Interfacing, 2”x8”
  • Iron and pressing surface
  • Sewing needle and thread

Directions

  • Note
  • 1. Use 1/4” seam allowance for all machine stitching.
  • Placemat
  • 1. Pin 13” linen rectangle onto felt rectangle. Pin lace pieces across linen/felt rectangle; machine sew in place.
  • 2. With right sides facing, machine sew one 2-1/2” coordinating fabric panel to each side of linen/felt rectangle, creating front of placemat. Press seams open.
  • 3. With right sides facing, machine sew fabric backing to front of placemat, leaving 3” opening to turn right side out. Trim corners.
  • 4. Turn placemat right side out. Press well with iron. Slip stitch opening closed using needle and thread.
  • 5. Machine topstitch 1/8” from edge of finished placemat.
  • Napkin
  • 1. With right sides facing, machine stitch 14-1/2” squares together, leaving 2” opening to turn right side out.
  • 2. Clip corners and turn right side out. Press well with iron. Slip stitch opening closed using needle and thread.
  • 3. Machine topstitch 1/8” from finished edge of napkin.
  • Napkin Ring
  • 1. Following manufacturer’s instructions, fuse linen fabric to front and back of fast2fuse interfacing. Fold in edges and press well with iron.
  • 2. Pin lace pieces to linen. Machine stitch to secure lace.
  • 3. Randomly machine stitch more straight lines across linen for added decoration.
  • 4. Roll napkin ring into cylinder shape. Use needle and thread to hand sew button on cylinder to secure. Insert napkin through ring.
