In the United States, approximately 2,500 babies are born into poverty every day. The birth of a baby is a magical and exciting experience, but for some it’s entangled with mixed emotions of overwhelming anxiety and stress at the thought of providing for such a fragile little miracle. Newborns in Need (NIN) exists to make sure teen moms, stressed families, and overwhelmed mothers are supported in the first moments of their child’s life. Being handed a basket full of baby clothes, diapers, toys, and blankets can make a world of a difference for these struggling newborns and their families.
Carol Green founded NIN in 1992 after learning newborns that passed away would be buried in paper sacks or discarded with medical waste. Her heartbroken outrage resulted in gathering her fellow quilters to make angel gowns, hats, blankets, sleepers, and other baby essentials. Fast-forward 20 years; NIN now has more than 55 chapters all over the United States! Today, thousands of volunteers all across America make, collect, and fill kits with basic necessities such as: baby wash, sleepers, diapers, wipes, thermometers, blankets, and much more. The goal of NIN is to take care of needy babies by providing care necessities to agencies and hospitals serving premature, ill, or impoverished newborns free of charge.
Talented volunteers create warm tight-weave blankets, toys, bibs, diaper bags, booties, and angel gowns — that’s where you come in. In 2014, NIN donated 475,000 items serving 39,583 babies. Lets help boost these numbers to reach more newborns in need. For a list of patterns and guidelines on what to make, visit www.newbornsinneed.org. We also have a ton of patterns and instructions available on our website to get you started!
If you’re not too savvy with knitting, crocheting, or sewing, donate your old but clean wedding dress or prom dresses so that NIN volunteers can make angel gowns and bonnets from the fabric. They also accept monetary donations and store-bought items. Check out their wish list (www.newbornsinneed.org/donate/our-wish-list) to see what you can do to help. Donations should be sent to:
