Slip stitch (sl st). Insert hook into desired stitch, pass yarn over hook and draw through loop(s) on hook. This completes one Slip Stitch.
Chain Stitch (ch). Make Slip Loop near end of yarn as shown (see Figure 1). Insert hook in loop and pull both lengths of yarn to tighten loop on hook. The Slip Loop is now ready for first ch stitch. Hold hook in right hand. Pass hook under yarn and catch yarn with hook (see Figure 2). This is called "yarn over" (yo). Hold base of loop as shown to keep Slip Loop large enough to pull hook through. Turn hook and draw yarn through loop. This completes one Chain Stitch. Repeat Chain Stitch to make as many stitches as needed. One stitch always remains on hook (see Figure 3). (Note: It is important to keep each chain stitch loose enough for hook to easily pass through.)
Single Crochet (sc). Chain for desired length. Insert hook in second ch from hook (see Figure 4). Pass yarn over hook and draw through stitch only. There are now two loops on hook. Pass yarn over hook again (see Figure 5) and draw through both loops (see Figure 6). This completes one Single Crochet. To continue in Single Crochet, insert hook in next ch and work 1 sc; repeat in same way across. At end of row, ch 1 and turn. For second row, work sc in first sc of previous row, entering from front of stitch and passing under two top threads of stitch. Continue working 1 sc into each stitch. At end of row, ch 1, turn, and continue.
Double Crochet (dc). Chain as directed. Yarn over hook and insert hook in fourth ch from hook. Yarn over hook and draw yarn through stitch only. There are now three loops on hook. Yarn over hook (see Figure 7) and draw through two loops, leaving two loops on hook. Yarn over hook (see Figure 8) and draw yarn through two loops, leaving one loop on hook. This completes one Double Crochet. To continue, yarn over hook, insert hook in next ch and work 1 dc; repeat to end of row. At end of row, work dc in next dc of previous row, entering from front of stitch and passing under two top threads. At end of row, ch 3, turn, and continue.
Treble Crochet (tr). Chain for desired length. Yarn over hook twice and insert hook in fifth ch from hook. Yarn over hook and draw yarn through stitch only. There are now four loops on hook (see Figure 9). Yarn over hook, draw through two loops, yarn over and draw through two loops again, yarn over and draw through two loops a third time, leaving one loop on hook. This completes one treble Crochet.
Half Double Crochet (hdc). Chain for desired length. Yarn over hook, and insert hook in third ch from hook. Yarn over hook, and draw yarn through stitch only. There are now three loops on hook. Yarn over hook, and draw through all three loops. This completes one Half Double Crochet. To continue in Half Double Crochet, yarn over hook, insert hook in next ch, and work 1 hdc; repeat in same way across. At end of row, ch 2 and turn. The "ch 2" counts as one hdc. For second row, work hdc in next hdc of previous row, entering from front of stitch and passing under two top threads of stitch. Continue working 1 hdc into each stitch. At end of row, ch 2, turn, and continue in same way as previous row.
Picot. Chain 3, sc in third ch from hook.
Fastening off. Cut yarn, leaving 6" tail. Yarn over, pull tail through last loop on hook. Use tapestry needle or hook to carefully weave tail back into work.
