The second annual National DIY Day — a movement to celebrate creativity and the art of making — is around the corner on April 2, 2017, and Craft Ideas has partnered as a media sponsor to help spread the word. Created by the Craft Box Girls team, the celebration was conceived during one of their brainstorming sessions. The women wanted to design a way to bring people together, inspire creativity for all ages and — most importantly — give back.
During the discussion, CBG’s COO Rosanna Penaflorida asked if there’s a National DIY Day. Seeing as there’s a National Find a Rainbow Day (April 3), National Eight Track Tape Day (April 11), National Two Different Colored Shoes Day (May 3) and National Chicken Dance Day (May 14), surely there is a National DIY Day, right?
"There was not, so we jumped on that and picked a day,” Lynn Lilly, founder of Craft Box Girls, said.
Away they went to start the process: April 2 was chosen and the planning began. When the day arrived, celebrations were had from Atlanta to New York to the UK to Australia. Lilly said she was “pleasantly surprised” with the success of last year’s day, so they are back this year to encourage everyone to reserve April 2 for a day of creating.
You can join Craft Box Girls leading up to the event for inspiration, DIY tips, live broadcasts, videos, events and more! CBG has partnered with makers, bloggers and brands to giveaway National DIY DAY parties, host community events and digital celebrations across the world.
Additionally, 25 crafting ambassadors will use their digital platforms to “live craft” on National DIY Day in events that will run from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. on April 2. The lineup of live-stream crafting and DIY events will be available at NationalDIYDay.com.
Because giving back is a huge part of the National DIY Day mission, this year Lilly has teamed up with AdoptAClassroom.org. The non-profit’s goal is to give teachers classroom materials they so desperately need. According to AdoptAClassroom.org, teachers spend on average $600 a year of their own money on school supplies because schools are losing funding rapidly.
This is where you come in. Leading up to National DIY Day, from March 1 to April 2, Craft Box Girls will host a “Text to Give” campaign to fundraise for the non-profit, which will be promoted through its social media channels, ambassador network, television segments and via AdoptAClassroom.org. CBG is kicking off the campaign by donating $5,000 to the organization, and hopes its followers can lend a hand as well.
CBG has teamed up with Plaid Crafts to give 15 lucky crafters a kit to host a National DIY DAY craft party at home with three friends!
